mute? no sound
Can't figure out what happened to my sound. Tracks are playing, volume is up. Other sounds on my computer (like the notification for emails) play fine. I can play my music files with realplayer as well. I'm broadcasting to a shoutcast station and can walk to another computer in my house & download the station & listen to the file there. But I can't get any volume out of Winamp on the local desktop that's running it.
I rescanned the watch folders for new files this morning. And now, no volume. I checked the mute button & volume is at 100%. Any ideas? Thanks for your time. Vista Home Premium Dell Inspiron 503S Intel 2.20 ghz 2037 MB ram 32 bit Angela Thanks very much, Angela Sawyer www.weirdorecords.com |

if you were hearing sound fine a couple of days ago may want to check what you have done since then
i doubt shoutcast stops they playback through your speakers but it could cause it also check the output plugins (in the preferences) make sure its on directsound out if it is check and make sure the settings in side the plugin are set correctly for your speaker setup if none of these cause any change i can search and see what causes it for you so let us know thanks rob (c)rob 2013 (picture & SN) (please note) As users we can't give others help unless we get full details of the problem that you are having |

As I said before, the only thing I've done since the last time I heard Winamp was rescan the folders in the media library. I've been switching around the settings in the sound output plugins, but still can't hear a thing.

I went back to check this again just now, & found something that could be the source of the problem. I can't seem to configure the Nullsoft NULL Output Plug-In v1.0 beta (x86) [out_null.dll]. When I try to open it in the preferences, nothing happens. Is that normal?

Okay, so about ten minutes ago I resent all the Direct Sound output preferences to default. I was sitting here googling for the beta 86 plugin mentioned above to try & see what it was, and without prompting, Winamp starts making sound again!?! Nearly scared me out of my chair. I can't imagine how or why that took place, but seems like it's going to continue, at least for now.

well the problem fixed itself either that or the files it was trying to play aren't playing correctly
see if it's only certain files that aren't playing if all players work it may have been a glitch in the signal to your sound card if it's not that the reset worked and you maybe set for the long run let me know hopefully the error is gone for good thanks rob (c)rob 2013 (picture & SN) (please note) As users we can't give others help unless we get full details of the problem that you are having |

Seems okay- if I go back to a file in the playlist from an hour or two ago it plays just fine. So seems I just needed to fiddle with preferences more. Thanks for the advice.

http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details/28451 is the plugin you were trying to use it says it mutes the winamp (uses for the shoutcast streaming since you have to play the file to stream it (unlike orb/winamp remote which uses the file itself)) this is why you got no sound untill you switched back to direct sound output (when the output plugin is highlighted that is the plugin used)

Keep tweaking those output plugins, that's what eventually worked for me.

Ok so I am a self-proclaimed noob but I am having issues with sound on my notebook. I have my stereo connected to my pc via the headphone jack and until an hour ago, it was working like gravy. In that time I had played a demo of Civilizations IV but had installed it prior to my audio issues. I have checked the tech support forums and followed their advice to no avail. I had uninstalled and reinstalled Winamp but same thing. Music plays on other applications simply not Winamp. I am not sure if there is a conflict with drivers or dll files with other applications and output with Winamp and honestly I am not even sure where to start. Any advice would be helpful. I can give any specs about my computer that can help you narrow out potential issues. Thanks again.

I am having this same issue with my winamp.
Specs: Winamp 5.552 Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit Dell Inspiron I1420 Intel Core2 Duo 4G RAM SigmaTel High Definition Audio The problem started for me a few days ago, after installing the LastFM application from their website. After that, Winamp suddenly stopped playing any sound. Files play, but no sound comes out. All windows sounds work fine, and my files play in other media players with no problem. Things I have tried: - Uninstalled LastFM application - Uninstalled Winamp - Wiped winamp registry stuff - Reinstalled winamp several times - Tried all the settings in Output multiple times, both with and without restarting winamp every time - Checked volume controls Currently, I am reinstalling my sound drivers to see if that works, although I can't imagine it will make a difference since my other sounds are working just fine. I'll come back and edit this post if anything happens.. |

Erf, I can't edit but I did manage to get my sounds working properly by reinstalling my sound drivers.
Any idea what may have caused this to happen though? Everything but winamp was working fine, so I didn't think my drivers would have been off. |

Same Issue / Fixed it
I had the same issue. I have an Acer Aspire Laptop. I Uninstalled my audio driver and rebooted. The system reinstalled the driver and all works great.

I have the same problem since my cat walked across the keyboard. Nothing is set to mute but full 100% of volume, all other computer sounds work and all audio plays in WMA. Just hate using it. What possible button could he have hit that would have turned off the sound in winamp?
Winamp uninstalled and reinstalled. Sound drivers uninstalled and reinstalled. Dell Desktop with 2 gigs of RAM. Last edited by OWhatAThrill; 22nd May 2009 at 03:27. |
