How does the Auto Tagger determine what song it is? I've had a lot of bad tags from that.

It analyses the audio then matches a signature against a database of signatures to get the tag info. Or it thinks "This is not generic pop so I am going to fuck you over and tag these 1500 tracks as the same track."
