Adding media problems

Sometimes whenever I add media to Winamp, the "getting information from media" dialogue box opens, and at a random percentage, it stops working and any other window I'm working on selects and then gets deselected approximately once every second (meaning that, if I'm typing this up, this window deselects every second or two and then reselects, making typing or working incredibly annoying). What's worse is that the media doesn't add, and I can't add quite a bit of it. Can someone help me?

PS: Is DivX the best codec out there? Some of my video doesn't play sound with DivX and I'm wondering if there's a different codec I should install that might work?
