Crash on startup (using ChipAmp)
I recently encountered a problem where Winamp would repeatedly crash on startup. I am using Chipamp, which adds support for chiptune formats to winamp. It turns out that one of these formats is *.msc, which is also the file extension for Microsoft Management Console snap-ins on Windows XP and Vista. I had gone told winamp to register itself to play all music formats, and it grabbed that file extension. The next time I opened the computer management console, Winamp tried to open it instead, and saved the file name in its current playlist. As the file was not of the expected format, the plugin crashed, taking winamp with it. Since Winamp restores its playlists on startup, it became impossible to launch.
If anyone else if having a similar problem, delete Winamp.m3u and Winamp.m3u8 from your %appdata%\Winamp directory, and it should fix the problem. |

Thank you
I had the same problem with winamp crashing on start up. I found your solution and applied it; now everything is working properly on start up since I have removed the .m3u and .m3u8 extension file types from preferences. I also deleted my playlist because it used the .m3u extension.
Other people were saying that you had to remove your playlist or either the playlist was too long and that's why it crashed on start up (opening of winamp player); however, your solution is correct, the problem was with the file extension type. Thank you. |

I'm glad my solution was of help: however, it's the .msc extension that's at fault, not the .m3u or .m3u8 ones. It's just coincidence that the files you need to delete to fix the problem have those extensions.
