I have a pretty old PC. 48MB of FP ram AMD-K62 350Mhz and 15Gb HD,and Win 98. My winamp had the same problems as others, it would play for about 30 seconds then have a little skip and keep playing. I read over all the forums and eventually changed from WaveOut to DirectSound and cranked some of the settings. The skipping stopped, but it may skip if under a large load. Then I realized maybe it was my old soundcard. Big ol ISA ESS 1868 card. I dumped that and got a PCI sound card and went back to WaveOut, I've never had a skip since. Maybe for some users that could be a solution. Dump the sound card for a new one. I know mine was old and slow. I've had winamp running for days while doing other things, not a skip ever. Now my only problem is, my winamp isn't as loud as it used to be. I've gone over every EQ and volume control in Windows, for the card, and in winamp. What can I do to get my volume back...Is it the card. It must be cause nothing in winamp changed...
Sorry for being so long

Sounds like a RAM thing to me, you really don't have squat.

Anyways, max your buffer in waveOut, and max all the sliders below it (Preferences (Ctrl-P) >Plug-ins > Input > select "Nullsoft waveOut..." > Hit Configure). Also, try downgrading to 2.65 or below, it was les processor intensive.

? ?

Errmm . . . goto Windows Sound Control (little yellow speaker in systray) & bump up Main volume & Wave sliders . . . or whatever relevant devices that aren't loud enough, eg. CDAudio, MIDI, etc.

Also make sure your speakers are up loud enough.

Well I'm glad that my skipping stopped when I napped the new card. For my sound levels, i usually kept the main one up almost all the way. Then the wav slider would change when i chaned the volume in winamp. The card comes with software, that is cranked also. My speakers are just a little below half volume. Maybe it's just me and I'm thinking it's lower than it is. But I do have to move winamp's volume more than before. I've been working with all this for a while so I know where ALL the volume controls are. It's really not that big of a problem, It still gets loud just not like it was before...maybe it's better this way. It's not as bad as some problems I've seen here so I'll leave it alone.
