Doing a search from the shoutcast support page for mp3pro brings up a lot of hate threads from the past 2 years. Nearly everyone screaming that mp3pro is dead, mp3 is an antique, and that aac+ is what anybody that is anybody is using.
Interesting, since when you go to shoutcast .com at this very instant, in the top 20 stations (by listener count) only 2 are using aac, the others are all mp3. Yes, I can hear some (yes - some, not the earth shattering brilliance that the aac fans extol) improvement in my stream when I encode to aac+v2 at 96/44.1 over my mp3 at the same settings. But, if most of the players out there can play mp3 natively, and can still get my mp3pro stream just at regular mp3 quality, and you have to install a plug-in on the most popular players (wmp, itunes, etc.) in order to get aac, most of the general public will not be able to get the aac stream, and move on to a station they can hear. I was excited that by moving to SAM Broadcaster that I could encode to aac+v2, without installing yet another plug-in to winamp. But after finding out that only a few players can support it without my low-tech listeners doing extra work, I'm staying with mp3 until the other players catch up. |
