Yet another "I can't get winamp to start when I insert a cd"..

When I insert an audio cd, autoplay opens a "My Computer"-type window that lists the cda files on the disc, when I want the cd to open and play in winamp.

I know there's a lot of people who have asked this question, and I did read a bunch of those threads. I'm still stuck.. In winamp, I have "Launch winamp for audio cds" checked, and CDA files associated. Under Control panel/folder options/filetypes/AudioCD, "Play" is set to my winamp executable and this is set to default. I also right-clicked on my cd drive in My Computer and selected properties/autoplay and associated "Music CD" with winamp.

None of these things have worked. Can anyone help me?

BTW, I have Windows XP SP3.

Thanks in advance,

N.

I did only the right click drive > associate step and it worked for me.
Since folder options > file types has an [audiocd] entry I thought the setting might be there, but no such luck.

Actually, now that I've changed it I can't get it to change back... gotta hit apply and then ok straight away or it change back if you move to another disk type, and then it doesn't change anyway. I'mma blame windows and just say it's fubar, don't even try and use autoplay. .

Thanks for the reply, but I've gotta think there's some way to do it. Originally, winamp did open my cds, but after multiple program installations over time, something must've went out of whack.

Anyone else care to shed some light?

Thanks for your response.

Wow, I thought for sure this was gonna work.. I actually tried both methods - the registery file first, then I downloaded and went through tweakXP.. Neither one of those options worked. Then I went back and double-checked to make sure that all of those settings I mentioned in my initial messages were still set up the way I said they were.. Yep! Oh, and I forgot to mention - The very first thing I tried was to un/reinstall winamp.

Good lord, is my quest to make a cd open in winamp impossible? Is windows really fubar, as Paul mentioned above?

I can't find anything wrong. What steps did you use for the My Computer > right-click on CD > Properties/Autoplay procedure? Was it like the following...

You could also check for media change notifications.

For XP, open Regedit and look at the "AutoRun" value here

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom

1 = On
0 = Off

JonnyMac - Yep, those are the instructions I followed, except I have My Computer as on icon on my desktop and opened it that way, instead of the start button.. Everything else was exactly the same.

Ujay - I checked this registery value. Here's what it looks like:

AutoRun REG_DWORD 0x00000001(1)

That means it's on, right?

Yes, that does mean on.

Are you sure this is happening to regular Audio CDs and not mixed content CDs?

In Tweak UI > My Computer > open AutoPlay branch > Handlers
scroll down the list of handlers, do you see more than one item for Winamp?

It is happening for audio cds, not mixed content ones.

Nope, there's only the one item for winamp.. "Play using Winamp". Mind you, there's multiples for all the other progs I have installed - Windows Media Player, PowerDVD, Nero, etc. But I went through and made sure that "audio cd" was deselected for each one of them.

I am trying to narrow down possible causes. A conflict between two Winamp handlers may have been one of them.

Try unassociating CDs with Winamp. Then temporarily associate CDs in Windows Media Player (WMP > Tools > Options > File Types tab). Close WMP and reboot the computer. After that unassociate CDs for WMP then reassociate for Winamp. It is a roundabout method, however it has helped with correcting file type associations.
