I have a Win2K SP1 system (700 MHz P3, 256 MB RAM). Soundcard: M Audio Delta DIO2496.

I have a CD track that was ripped to a networked HD. When played back from the network (as a wav file), it sounds just fine. When played from my CD player, I get a huga amount of snaps, droupouts, etc.

I have installed the CD Reader plugin (in_CDReader.dll) and I have adjusted all of the settings in waveout to their maximum values. I have also turned off visualization.

When laying, WinAmp is using < 10% of my CPU.

Any ideas as to the problem and how to fix it? Your help is greatly appreciated.

To work out all these troubles and what there is to gain

By this, do you mean you burned a cd from the .wav? Most burning software has provisions for removing pops and crackles, and normalizing the volume.

More info on problem

To answer your questions:

These are original CD's - not burned from .wav. The noise DOES NOT exist on the CD - it is an artifact that occurs only when they are played back using Winamp (or Windows Medai Player) through by Delta DIO 2496 card. The same files that have been ripped to .wav play back perfectly through Winamp.

I get no audio at all from the CD when in_CDReader.dll is not installed.

Thank you for your help!

If you get this noise with all software cd players, it probably means that your drive isn't configured properly in:
System -> Device Manager -> CD-ROM -> CD-ROM type -> Properties -> Settings.
Could be something to do with "Sync data transfer" & "DMA" ?

The only other settings are in Multimedia Control Panel -> CD Music tab
Or,
Devices tab -> Media Control Devices -> CD Audio Device -> Properties -> settings

btw,
it sounds like there is no audio cable from your cd drive to soundcard
This is why there's no audio with the default plugin.
Unless the volume levels were muted/too low in Windows Volume Control?

Other possible paths to explore:
Update soundcard drivers & DirectX

Of course, there's always the chance that the SCSI lead isn't connected properly, or that the IDE device is going kaputt

Thank you for your reply. Let me provide more information:

I only get this noise with ASIO compliant CD players (Winamp and MS Meia Player). I have tested a number of combinations with both of my sound cards and the only one this is the only combination that causes problems.

And yes, there is no audio cable from my CD player to the Selta DIO card, that is why I picked up Winamp in the first lace - because it is ASIO compliant.
