Winamp crashes when plugging in mp3 player
Hi there.
XP SP2, automatic updates active Very recent version of WinAMP SONY 2GB MP3 player Until a couple of days ago all was going fine. Unlike my previous more primitive MP3 device, this SONY was not automatically shown in windows explorer when plugged in. So I started using WinAMP to transfer files to it, which was fine. Then one or two things happened which I can imagine started causing troubles. 1) I had to "reset" the MP3 device at some point because it didn't want to start up (when not connected to PC) This seemed to f*ck up the playlists. 2) I accidentally confirmed a Windows Media Player update from WMP9 to WMP11. After the WMP update from 9 to 11,I first of all noticed that from then on the MP3 device DID show up in explorer, and there's also an indicator in the lower right of the taskbar. But from this point onwards WinAMP will crash 10s or so after plugging in the MP3 device. No errormessages, nothing logged. The window just disappears and no executable is left running either! First of all I tried removing and reinstalling WinAMP. This didn't make a difference. I also turned back the WMP11 installation. I'm now back at WMP9 but this also didn't help. I noticed that this uninstall was not 100% thorough though, since the MP3 device appears in windows explorer unlike before the whole story started. I suspect the problem is somehow related to THIS, because even a complete reformat of the MP3 device (to possibly solve any problems with item (1) above), made no difference. Any tips welcome because I want to continue using WinAMP! |

I should have checked some other threads more thoroughly.
But apparently I searched the wrong terms at first...Anyways, my problem is fixed. The thing that did it was uninstalling an additional component (Microsoft/WMP11 User-Mode Driver Framework) that is being installed with Windows Media Player 11, but not automatically UNinstalled when uninstalling WMP11. |
