Fixing Vista crash on install/run problem
If your winamp crashes like mine did, after I installed the newest winamp, then here is what I did to fix it.(also note I uninstalled and tried to install very old versions of winamp and still had a crash, so this is how I fixed it so that the newest winamp would work and im assuming old versions would have worked too with this fix)
go to my computer, in the address bar where it says 'my computer' type: %appdata% delete the winamp folder. empty trash bin. install new winamp(it will crash when starting up) go to c:\program files\winamp make a folder called 'old' go into plugins folder. take all the plugins, move them into the 'old' folder. startup winamp, winamp should now startup. now exit winamp go into 'old' folder, move all plugins back into the 'plugins' folder. startup winamp, DONE. Winamp should now be working! |

Quite similar to our clean install instructions...
By the way, I hope you didn't overwrite any of the latest 5.551 default plugins with older versions (which sounds likely judging by your above instructions) |

nope, I installed the new winamp and then moved all plugins to the 'old'(old folder just was the name I called the folder.. the folder could have been called backup or anything else..) folder then moved back.
everything is up to date.
