I am having trouble setting up hotkeys to jump to a specific file

Is there a way to set up several hotkeys to jump to specific files or play lists? eg. pressing "a" opens file a.mp3 and pressing "b" opens b.mp3. Also is it possible to have this program listen to the serial port for the commands or will I have to set up another program to interpret the serial commands to keyboard hotkeys? I am trying to set up my own version of the "emergency party button" with different buttons for different parties like "rock" or "80's". I'm sure there is probably something similar to this already but i am having trouble finding it.
Thanks very much
Demir
