Winamp context menu options are not disabling (XP)
I've finally begun to notice how huge my context menus are starting to get, so I wanted to disable Winamp's option in them because I never use them.
I've followed all the tutorials, disabled the folder context menus in the File Types menu, and disabled the other options in the Shell Options menu, but nothing has changed. Upon restarting Winamp, I don't have the problem with them re-enabling themselves. They say they're disabled, but nothing has changed. I haven't tried restarting yet (it'd be a tad inconvenient at the moment), although none of the tutorials have said to do so. Any ideas? Is this a bug? I've searched around, and only found issues of people who can't get them to turn on (I wish I couldn't get them to turn on...) Last edited by Mitt; 19th April 2009 at 00:12. |

not knowing what OS you're using i'm going to guess it's Vista. if that is the case then at least with the Shell Options page you're going to have to run Winamp as an administrator inorder to have the correct priveleges to edit the menus (since i've not had the time to work on Vista+UAC handling in the plugin which implements that prefs page). pretty much changing all off the menu options when running as an admin should ensure that they are allowed to be removed and then you can use winamp as normal after closing (not ideal case but it's one off the areas in the player that still needs some work made on it).
if that's not the case then we're going to need Winamp & system specs to have a better idea of your system/configuration. -daz |

Oh right, I guess I should've clarified all that.
I'm actually running XP SP3. Using Winamp 5.541. I don't think my system specs are terribly relevant for this, but I've got an MSI mobo, AMD Athlon 3200+, 2GB of RAM, a GeForce 7800GT, etc etc. I may just try a different Winamp version. |

Yes, the latest version might help. So might restarting your OS, since changes to the context menu don't usually take place until it is restarted, since usually it's via a DLL loaded at start-up, that the registry has told it to load; turning it off in the application probably didn't trigger an unload of the DLL and registry changes don't usually have much effect until a restart, so yeah, restart and upgrade winamp and then if you still having problems the nice man who already started helping you might be able to help some more
.<3 you daz .p.s. did you actually try doing this in admin mode as suggested? You didn't state... |

I'll reply back when I reboot and update though. I thought it might work without it since it did when I changed my WinRAR context menu options. |

XP has an administrator account, if you don't know about accounts or don't have other accounts on the system then you are probably running in the administrator account*. This can be undesirable, since in the administrator account you can do pretty much anything to your system, and if you can do it any nasties you pick up can do it too.

So, I rebooted finally (yes, 3 weeks later), and it worked, and I feel like a noob for not trying the simplest of remedies for all computer problems.
Thanks for the replies though. |
