Winamp sending commands to external player

I've searched but can't find this covered already.

I want to use Winamp as a front end to another music player. The music player is actually a Networked Media Device. So I want to send commands to this device which will be on the same network as the server running Winamp. Just two simple command-line commands are needed - play a single file or play a playlist.

Has this been done or do I have to create a plugin to achieve it?
