Winamp shuffle algorithm
Hello,
I've been using winamp since version 2 and I like it, but because of my exhaustive use of it I've noticed something that is being an issue for me right now. And is about the shuffle, I mean it plays random music that's good, the problem is that is just TOO random. So, what's the magic behind that algorithm? or is nothing but a plane and simple random?? Its because I can tell you, there are over 2000 songs in my playlist, enough for playing continously for 7 days without repeating one song, but Im not listening to music more then 3 hours a day, still this random is repeating songs I've heard maybe last day, or even in the same day, is always repeating the music, I close winamp, open it back, starts with any song, and so on, but again it will hit tracks that were played last time, in fact, there are songs in my playlist that I might have heard only one time! the first time I added them, because the random is never gonna choose them. I guess my question would be if thats gonna change some day? or hows this actually working? Can't it be a little less random and keep track of the music already played, maybe random by genre, number of hits of one song, you know, something smarter! Thank you. Oh by the way, this is winamp 5.552 running on vista 64bits, but the OS doesn't matter, it happens the same on XP. |

That's how random works. All tracks have equal chance of being played, regardless of what was played in the past. Something random has no memory. Now if you want to randomize your playlist, you can do so in the Playlist Editor > Sort >Randomize List and then play straight through.

I like to have my playlist always sorted by title.
Is it possible to make an enhancement request? |

shift+r will add it to the alternate playback queue and randomise at the same time (assuming the jump to file extra plugin is installed).
