When WinAmp is playing from the CD drive none of my windows sounds play. In control panel I go to sounds and try to play something. I get the message "Windows cannot play the c:\winnt\media\wow.wav. Your sound card may be in use." message. How do I 'fix' this?

Go to options -> preferences -> plugins -> output and change to "direct sound". You might also want to update your directX if you haven't done so for quite some time, as directsound is based on it.
Its also possible that this is a soundcard/ soundcard driver problem. Some drivers, or soundcards cannot handle having two diffrent streams to waveOut. try updating the drivers for your soundcard. Like my photography? Buy some here.... |

This is on Windows NT 4.0 workstation. DirectX is not an option. Which of the four options in output do I configure for direct output?

Whe you go to options -> preferences -> plugins -> output, the plugins that you have to worry about are the Nullsoft WaveOut Plugin, and the Nullsoft Directsound plugin. Select the Directsound plugin, and see if you can hear the system sounds. If it doesn't work, go back and select Waveout - it's a better plugin.
It might be a good idea to go to the Windows Control Panel, go to Multimedia (Sounds and Multimedia on some computers) and go to the "Audio tab. Make sure that "Use only preferred devices" is UNchecked. Like my photography? Buy some here.... |

It may just be your soundcard. What soundcard do you have?

First, could we just confirm whether this is anything to do with any settings in Winamp at all? Does the same problem arise when you play CD's with other players? (eg. Windows CD Player)
I was going to suggest that you goto: Winamp Prefs -> Input -> CD Plugin -> config: uncheck "sample input from soundcard" But if you can't hear other sounds when using other players then it's nothing to do with Winamp, but something to do with your soundcard or Windows config instead. btw, WinNT does support earlier versions of DirectX I'm not sure which exactly . . . is it up to DX v3 or v4 ????? Have you installed the latest service pack for WinNT? (sp6) |

The Winamp Prefs -> Input -> CD Plugin -> config: uncheck "sample input from soundcard" seems to have fixed it.
As far as DirectX goes, since this is the computer at work, I don't want to load it if I don't have to. Thanks for everyone's assistance. Hooooooooooooooooooooowl at the moon! |
