I am trying to get system sounds to play while playing mp3's. I must have an older sound card because when I play Mp3's all other sounds are blocked. I tried switching the output to direct sound, but whenever I play a mp3 file winamp crashes with an unable to write to a certain memory location. Any ideas?

Go to START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL. In there, go to SYSTEM -> DEVICE MANAGER to get a list of devices on your computer. Your soundcard is under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers"

You can't use DirectSound with WinNT
WinNT only supports DirectX v3 (or is it 4?), but no higher
Winamp & most other programs/games/etc that use DirectX drivers require the minimum version of 5.1 (or is it 6.1), but DirectX 7.0a or higher = recommended.
Time to upgrade to Win2k maybe . . . and, if there's still no joy, it could be time to get a new soundcard too

Not in this case.
If it was the other way round, then maybe so!
Default "PPC" = Normal (Prefs -> Options)
Bumping it up to High or RealTime gives Winamp more priority, which in theory should prevent other sounds from being heard. However, it all depends on the OS & soundcard capabilities/config/etc.
