You've just discovered CDDB
. CDDB is a Disc Recognition Service with a database of CD text information, used for CD recognition purposes. The database stores information such as the title of the CD, and the titles of the tracks on it. So, when you put a music CD in your computer's CD-ROM drive, winamp, because it's a CDDB enabled player, will access the CDDB servers to identify the CD and download this information, and display it in the playlist window.

I put in the CD and.... nothing.
Please pardon my ignorance here in how to post. I gotta make it kinda quick here at work.
In the past versions of WinAmp, after inputing the Info for my CD (Filling out the info after hitting ALT-3) the CD is automaticly recognized by the program and all the names pop up. I (sadly) do not have unlimited access to the 'Net from work, (No CDDB for me..) but I still like to have the track and artist names pop up when I pop the CD in the drive. Now it seems that with 2.75 the names are gone from my CD's; I have to re-enter them over and over again (which can become obvious to my Boss when he saunters by for his 2 hour lunch.) Is this something that was changed or am I just a lame-o who needs to re-RTFM? If there's some option that I'm missing, please tell me. I save the playlist after I enter all the info and try to load it when the names don't automaticly pop up, but then when it plays, the names go bye-bye and "Track01.cda" or some such rot pops up as each track is selected. Also, on a totally different tack here, when I select for WinAmp to shrink down to the system tray, it will show 2x, once for the agent which is always there, and once for the program which is minimized. Again, this didn't seem to happen in 2.5. No biggie, just kinda annoying. Thanks! Spartamal |

I don't believe there was an agent back then. You can disable the agent if you want by holding Ctrl and pressing P when Winamp's main window is the active window. In the preferences menu that comes up, go into the Agent section and uncheck all the boxes.
From then on you'll never even get a peep from the agent. |

Re: CDDB problem
Make sure no files in the Winamp dir have the Read-Only attribute, including the dir itself. The main file in question here is in_cdda.cdb (which is the file that stores all cddb info). You shouldn't have to enter the info more than once, but if that file is Read-Only then the data won't be getting saved! |
