I would like to know what editor would be the easiest to use and the most complete. The editor I am currently using doesn't include the mini-browser section of the skin. My skins aren't very good yet but i am looking for ways to make them better. i feel the browser would be one way to make them more complete. please post a reply if you think you can help.

Well, I'd say Adobe Photoshop [ ^ ] because as far as I know all skin editors suck bad.

PS: If you're just learning to skin, you better learn skinning WA3

http://www.skinmaster.co.uk (that link should work; correct me if I'm wrong, folks) until you get your feet on the ground, but after tha, use image editing programs, such as Adobe Photoshop or Jasc Paintshop Pro.

As for skinning winamp 3.0, stick with 2.x because 3.0 has some weird funky scripting xml stuff... they'll roll out a full featured editor with the final release, but skinning 2.x is fine for now. Firstly, relatively low percentage of the community uses 3.0 regularly, and secondly, 3.0 will be backwards compatible with 2.x skins.

Jayn, been a long time.

And yes, listen to the lady; it's extremely strange and convoluted... wait till the editor/wizard/little helper on the sidelines is released before you try fiddling with xml scripts.

GAAAH!!!

I hate XML, it's too screwy! It reminds me of HTML that got into some horrible genetic engineering accident. Besides, WiMP uses XML-based skins. Nullsoft shouldn't try to copy Mi¢ro$oft. I'll be waiting for that Skin Wizard with open arms.

Okay, enough with my useless opinions. Can anyone find me a "How To Make Things That Don't Suck With Paint Shop Pro" tutorial?

Skin Editors

I would suggest Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro if you can't appropriate Photoshop. Skin editors can't quite match the design capabilities of a good graphics program. As for Wa2 or Wa3, I'm learning Wa3, but for beginniners, start with Wa2 and work your way up!

and asking the ppl in these forums for help when you are completely stumped

that's what i did for my first skin and it turned out fairly well

Maybe for Photoshop LE or for an upgrade, but Adobe Photoshop 6 Full costs $600 US ($1000 CDN)! And I used both Photoshop and GIMP and GIMP is the victor!

The GIMP isn't just freeware, its Open Source and one of the older free software projects. It was ofiginally developed at the eXperimential Computing Foundation (XCF) at Berkley. If you've ever seen the gnome project almost all of its artwork is done with the GIMP.
The GIMP/GTK+ for Windows homepage is: http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/
The X11 version's homepage is http://www.gimp.org
The Mac GIMP/GTK+ homepage is: http://www.macgimp.org/

There that covers all three major platforms.

DUH, No professional would EVER use Gimp.
Go to a Graphic artist and ask what he/she uses. 9 out of 10 will tell you Adobe, Win or Mac.

Asshole......not the first time I've been called that over Photoshop.

Most graphics pros use Adobe software because it's the best available... Graphics pros don't use Linux because it's too complicated, and they take courses on using Adobe products. As soon as we get people teaching courses on using Linux, we may get a few designers to convert! Or, we could try to talk Adobe into porting Illustrator, Photoshop, Pagemaker, etc. to XFree86!

Adobe rules. Photoshop will maintain it's position for years to come because of it's power, but also because of it's portability. Just ask Chev. Most serious graphics pros, from print shops to digital artists, use Photoshop, so if you start a project in New York, finish it in Philedelphia, and print it in Paris, you'll be sure that the workstations (and printers) you use can accept the .psd format.

I tried gimp. I wasn't too impressed. Admittedly, it's one of the best freeware things I've ever seen, but it simply doesn't have the power and control of PS.

I'm very happy with Photoshop. I used Paint Shop Pro for a while and liked it, and even laughed at the idea of using Photoshop... But, one day, my dad got it for his job, and I tried it... Now I'm hooked and only use Paint Shop Pro for a few features, like the animation shop. Photoshop is a fantastic product with lots of power, and I use it for most everything... But, I respect the GIMP for its beginnings, and the power it has. I just don't use it because, right now, Photoshop is everything I need.

Well, Adobe ImageReady, which ships with PS 6.0 has had me thoroughly amazed. Imagine... making gifs is as simple as hiding layers... I used to use Gamani Gif Movie Maker until upgrading to PS 6, which was good in it's own right, but ImageReady is simply amazing.

Not to say that PSP is bad for animations... after all, that's what smilie zen master Sarge uses

I tried photoshop butIi just fount the UI so counter-intuitive. I right clicked on the image and like nothing happened. I spent like 15 minutes trying to figure out how to tear off a menu before giving up. And i still can't figure how to get rid of the stupic container window. But i do think image ready is cool.

i love photoshop, i got my older bro. the graphic artist in training to teach me how to use it, and i was able to whip out my sig in 20 minutes using a combo. or photoshop and imageready
they're both great, though, yeah, the interface is hard to use at first, but once it's learned, it actually makes a lot of sense, and i love the history and layers windows
