Pro 5.58 Won't Burn - Fresh Install - Please?

Uninstalled and re-installed... again.

Exact same error message as yesterday.

Did I provide the text files in the correct format this time? Don't quite understand why absolutely no response given some of the queries that apparently did get moderator attention. Tried to follow the "don't ignore at risk of" directions. If I'm doing something wrong here, please advise.

An Inconvenient Truth

UncaDood,

I sympathize with your frustration, as I and many others cannot burn CD's from recent versions of Winamp. Sad to say, but we are not likely to have our issues resolved by Nullsoft. Numerous posts confirm that CD burning from Winamp has been broken for quite a while. As the years pass, it is becoming clear that Nullsoft does not intend to fix this feature.

Of course, they have the right to make this decision, but they should be candid about it. If they are not willing to fix a feature, they should remove it. Instead, they leave it in, as well as this line on the Winamp Features Comparison Chart:

"Pro! Burn Audio CDs."

IMHO, that is just not playing fair with prospective buyers of the Pro version.

I do have a suggestion for you. You could try updating your Sonic Solutions PX Engine files from the Roxio site. Although this fixed some of my burn problems, it revealed others. But you are on XP and I am on Vista. And, since your burning from Winamp is already broken, you have nothing to lose.

First, backup your existing 13 PX files to another folder. On my PC they are found in

C:\Program Files\Common Files\PX Storage Engine\

Then go to Roxio Support and download the file pxengine4_18_16a.zip from:

kb.roxio.com/content/kb/General%20Information/000070GN

Now unzip the file to a temporary folder and run the exe. Reboot and try burning from Winamp. If it doesn't work, you can restore your backed-up files to the PX Storage Engine folder. And if your PC explodes in flames, please don't blame me!

Good luck and please let us know what happens.

Sonic engine produced a lot of issues in the past and I agree, that Winamp should use an own engine or the engine provided by the OS, since Sonic isn't that great, really. They should get rid of that shit in future.

Nevertheless, for most people the stuff is working, so saying that their advertisement for Pro isn't fair, is not correct.

Koopa, I would love to be proved wrong but I am skeptical after all this time. For example, I have seen no evidence that the Sonic Solutions files can be made to install and work properly on Vista and Windows 7. If solutions exist, then why are posts about the problem left either unanswered or unresolved?

If the problem is related to specific user setups and is not endemic in Winamp, then surely someone would have found an answer by now. At the very least, we can say that error handling in the Winamp installer is inadequate because it fails to work around common conditions that might prevent Sonic Solutions files from installing correctly.

The fact that the Nullsoft team no longer responds to complaints about CD burning suggests to me that they have lost interest in resolving these issues. That is really a shame because Winamp Pro is otherwise a great program.

I should point out, that most of the mods here are not working for Nullsoft. We provide tech support in our freetime. If there won't be an answer, it's simply the result, that we don't know, what we shall post.

Issues with Sonic are known. More than enough glitches with it are known and we're aware of it. Unless Sonic finally improves their shitty engine or AOL/Nullsoft decides to get rid of it, there is not much we can do about.

A lot of the issues are directly part of the bundled 3rd party engine. So sometimes it's simple, they can update the Sonic stuff and hope that incompatibility issues are gone. But source code for it is only available for Sonic, so only Sonic can address most of the issues.

I was never a huge fan of bundling 3rd party apps, especially 3rd party engines, which install deeply in the system and have massive problems with a couple of user setups.

R-man and Koopa, thanks for discussion, I have always liked WinAmp and just figured if they promo'd it, it would work, and that is why I upgraded; however, not sure I am tech proficient enough to attempt the suggested fix and/or workaround, may be just as much in my interest to upgrade my older version of Nero which is sort of what I was thinking I would avoid doing. If I make a stab at your suggestions, retroman, I will def post and advise results, again tnx for the voices from the void ...

I have Winamp 5.572. on Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP2. Burning was working OK for me until recently. Then, it stopped after the preparation step. I was hoping that 5.58 would provide a fix. I guess not. If anyone has a fix for Vista please post it here. In the meantime I have to go to Windows Media player to burn.
