I want Winamp to save all settings etc. in one special folder

In Firefox, you have Profiles which you can easily transport between computers. What about Winamp? Because i want to have my configured Winamp with all skins, settings and plugins portable and want to simply copy a settings folder to a new windows installation. How can i make it save all those data in den User Settings Folder in Windows (currently it seems like winamp saves the skins, plugins and settings in the AppData- and Program-Folder both)?

Another solution could be using Winamp Portable, but it is not really possible to keep it up 2 date because you always have to extract the new portable version and then all settings are gone.

It would be best if I could configure Winamp to save that data in a global folder so that multiple users have the same configured Program.

along with that, it's possible to specify the skins folder into a different location from the program files folder (and with 5.58x when changing the skin folder in the preferences it will move the skins to the new folder).

however most of the plug-ins have to be in the program files - is only visualisation and dsp plug-ins which allow being accessed from a different folder (though the ones shipped with Winamp would require fiddling of supporting dlls to make that even work).

The best would be, if all Winamp settings, plugin settings, skins, vis presest etc would be saved in the user folder.

But this will never happen, only Winamp's components and a hand full of 3rd party plugin can use per user settings. And even here we have a mix of files and folders. Even the Nullsoft plugins use several different ini files and a weird folder structure. The whole saving mechanism is complicated.

As for the majority of 3rd party plugins, you shouldn't expect any update, which would allow per user settings.

So you only have 2 real choices, if you want to save all in one location:

a. delete the file paths.ini, then all settings will be saved in Winamps program folder (this will produce massive issues under Vista/Win7, when UAC is enabled)

b. Use the Backup Tool, which automatically backs up all files and restores them to the correct locations.

if only we used Foobar2000 as that not has components in the user config folders as of v1.1 (official components remain in the main folder) which is a nice idea though obviously Winamp is screwed with doing such things for the compatibility unless every plug-in is remote patched (if only i could be motivated to work on gen_ocide again, hehe).
