Relay Servers
Please could someone explain to me how the relay servers work? I'm sorry this may sound so noobie of me, but I need to understand fully how they work for a new station.
From my understanding, a relay connects to the "primary" server, and then re-broadcasts it to clients. If that is right, please could someone explain how is best to publicise these relays. (By that, I mean (if possible) can the users click one link, and the server decides what relay to forward that client too? If that makes sense?). Thank you for any responses! Smiley31 (: |

The relays will be advertised automatically. I forget what the flags are in the config file, but they are the same for a relay server as a direct server for the purposes of advertising in the YP.
The shoutcast server doesn't care whether you are feeding it tunes from Winamp or whether it's a relay. If I could enhance your understanding a bit and you thought about it..... why should the server care? Bitstream from Winamp? Bitstream from your "primary" server? All the same. You probably have figured out how to relay a broadcast, there is some obvious widget in the config file to turn registration with the YP on. It's the same deal. It's the same config flag as a normal shoutcast server, as if your "primary" was your only server. I *think* these newer versions of shoutcast server are even smart enough to self negotiate with the YP provide access with multiple relays. I *think* that would be seamless from the point of view of your end users. I would add... I haven't run a shoutcast server in a couple years.... You would want to have patience..... maybe even for a few days about registry in the YP. You should make very sure you met all the requirements for admission to the YP directory or you'll end up with a ban. You should probably make sure you are flying nice before you turn the YP flag on. See sticky posts. Your reliability and continuous broadcast will be a consideration. Last edited by rockouthippie; 20th September 2010 at 11:16. Reason: azd |

Thank you for your quick reply!
Sorry, what I mean by publicise is for the clients to click a link on my website, not through the shoutcast listings. Basically, the radio is going to be an application for an up-coming website, so to listen to it, we need the listeners to click a link within that website. But then when the link is clicked, I need a method of the server to decide what relay server to connect to. I hope this is possible! Thanks again! Smiley31 (: |
