Upgrade screwed up WinAmp
Well, I hope I can explain my issues sufficiently to get the help I need, but since I am not even sure what the issue is, I'll just explain the best I can.
Anyway, I upgraded to the newest version two days ago now, but after the upgrade I couldn't play any file other than mp3. I had WinAmp set up to play all file types and everything worked well, aside from some minor annoyances I had hoped to repair with the upgrade. That didn't work, so I reverted back to 5.572. But this caused me to lose a ton of things and I don't know why. This entire system is one that I installed myself, and set it all up the way I liked it, but it has been so long since I installed everything, that I forgot what it was I did. I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit edition, WinAmp 5.572 with Powerplayer plugin, ClearOne skin, and K-lite codecs. I "was" able to play mp3, ogg, wav, flac, avi, mp4, wmv, and quite a few other file types if I recall correctly. AND, everything worked! Since the upgrade/downgrade, I needed to install a plugin to get the ogg playback ability back, but I can't play wav files now either. And when I play an avi, my desktop goes goofey and switches to basic from aero, making my desktop white, and sometimes causing explorer to hang. Not only that, but previously I had a nice transparent video control bar in my video window, but now I have an ugly gray bar across the bottom. More than anything, I want this transparent control bar back, because when it worked, Windows never reverted to the basic theme from aero. I also seem to have lost partial ability to control the volume with the mouse wheel. I can turn up the volume, but I can't turn it down with the wheel. The mouse wheel works fine with everything I use it for, just not for WinAmp. Earlier today, I re-installed Powerplayer, and updated my codecs, hoping to fix the video issues I am having. But I had no luck. I have no idea what I did to get everything working before, and it is really frustrating now because I have no idea what to do to get it all back. So I signed up for an account here in hopes that somebody would know what I am talking about and help me to get my system back to where it was before I installed 5.6. Please tell me what I need to do to fix these problems. Thank you. |

I think your best bet is to do a clean install.
Uninstall Winamp. Delete the C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\ folder Delete the %appdata%\Winamp folder. Obviously - if you have settings you care about, or ratings you want to preserve, then use the Winamp Backup Tool BEFORE you start uninstalling. -+-+- If a clean install is not an option, then we can start looking into all the sub-settings and fiddling with them. This will be in the preferences\File Types or Output\Plugins Start by attaching your List of Plugins -+-+- When installing, did you make sure to tick support for all the video and audio formats? -+-+- When you say "Does not play other formats", do you mean from within winamp? OR when double clicking in Windows 7? |

See, I've never had this problem before, and I have been using WinAmp for ten years or more. I have never had to do a "clean install" when upgrading, because the settings have always stayed the same. My guess is because WinAmp has always been faithful in keeping the platform the same through different versions, unlike Opera Web browser for instance.
Since the last upgrade I have lost all those settings, which like I pointed out, I can't remember what they used to be, because it has been so long since I installed them. Now, maybe "settings" is the wrong word, since that would mean simple adjustments to the properties menu. Plugins seem to be missing now, removed by the upgrade or something. With the upgrade, and all file formats chosen, I was only able to play mp3 files in WinAmp. Ogg files wouldn't play, neither would avi, wav, wmv, and so on. I then uninstalled the new version of WinAmp, leaving behind the plugins I had installed previously, because that always worked. I also left everything in the appdata folder, because that has always worked as well. What I am saying is I have never had this problem until the newest version was installed. Once I reinstalled 5.572, I was not given the choice to associate with ogg vorbis, and had to track down a seperate plugin for that format just so I could add ALL my music to the media library. I have never had to do this before, or I would have those plugins stored on my backup drive, which I did not until last night. Also, previously I was able to play all video formats(The ones I have in my library, which do not include swf, mov and other less popular formats). When I played these files, I had it set up so that the video did not interfere with Windows 7 Aero theme. I do not know what I did to solve that issue, but I have not had that problem since I first installed everything. Now when I play a video, my screen blinks for a while, the task bar turns white, as do the borders around my open windows. Then Windows informs me that the theme has changed to basic(?) because of a program that is incompatible with Aero, or something of the sort. Also, when I played videos before the upgrade, I was given a video window with a clean interface: A rectangular transparent control box in the bottom center of the video in full screen mode. This control box was very clean and matched the theme I have for windows quite well, which is the ClearOne theme for WinAmp and windows through Stardock software. I could see through it to view the video underneath it, and was able to play, pause, and stop the video with the onscreen buttons. Now when I play a video, not only does it interfere with Windows Aero theme(and sometimes freeze/crash eplorer), it also gives me the bland white gray progress bar that stretches across the entire bottom of the video in full screen mode. This particular issue is the one I wish to fix, and the re entire reson for the thread. What I want to know is: What was it that gave me this clean transparent video control box in full screen, and did not interfere with Windows Aero Theme? Was it a plugin or a codec? I had thought it was PowerPlayer, but it seems that is not the case. Unless I have a setting wrong or something. Maybe it is a special setting I have forgotten about in the K-lite codec pack? All I want to know is what program was it that gave me that style of video in WinAmp. |

You are running on a different OS now. And some of your plug-ins will be 5 or 10 years old and not compatible with modern Winamp. THIS is why you need to supply a list of them.
You have got plug-ins there that are clashing with current features of Winamp. For example, in the past you needed plug-ins for ogg and FLAC. These will now be causing you problems. So, backup that %appdata% branch and do a CLEAN install of Winamp. Then introduce those plug-ins back one by one until you get the Winamp you actually want. |

I'm running a different OS now? Contrary, I am still running the same OS that I was when I had WinAmp working the way I wanted. If you recall, it was WinAmp I upgraded, not Windows. Also, I listed all the plugins I use, well, ok, I forgot to mention one, Time Restore and Autoplay, so that makes a grand total of TWO plugins I use. Let me list them again for you:
Powerplayer 2.40 Time Restore and Auotoplay In addition to this, I have always used the K-lite codec pack, which is not a WinAmp plugin, but a general codec pack for Windows. All three of these have worked quite well with my version of WinAmp ever since I installed the system, aside form experiencing these same problems at the beginning, and then subsequently solving them. My problem, if you recall, is that I can't remember HOW I solved these problems. These plugins should not be clashing with my current version of WinAmp, since I am now using the same version that I was before I upgraded, like I mentioned earlier. The upgrade caused this issue, but I did not retain the newest version of WinAmp. I uninstalled, then installed 5.572, which worked before the upgrade, but does not work the way I had it before. In the past, if I needed plugins for ogg and flac, they must have been supplied by the WinAmp installer, because I do not have them saved as back up, which I do with EVERYTHING I install on my computers. Since the upgrade/downgrade, I have needed to install plugins for these files, the plugin for which is NOW saved as back up. Let me supply you with some visual reference as to the problem I want fixed. This is what my desktop looks like normally: ![]() And this is what happens when I play a video in WinAmp: ![]() Notice how the task bar suddenly changes to white, and the pop-up tells me what is happening. This is the (main) problem I am trying to fix. What I need to know is what is causing it to happen. It's rather obvious something is clashing, yes, what it is, I don't know. Look, I'm just going to wipe the hard drive and start with a completely fresh copy of Windows 7. It's due for that anyway. The registry is corrupted and the entire system is slowing down. I like to install Windows once a year to keep my computer in tip top shape, so that is what I am going to do. Maybe the problem will be solved when I get to the point where I am re-installing all my software. Who knows, the effort might kick start my memory and I'll remember what it was I tweaked to get this blasted machine working properly the last time. |

Dude, I'm having a similar problem with Windows 7 x64 playing video. I had to change the mp4 to use the directshow decoder, but the files play twice as fast with static and all high pitched.
