in the first episode of "Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking" he compares a planet winding up being hospitable to alien life to a lottery (this is paraphrasing, i couldn't find a transcript anywhere) "even if we don't know who wins most of the time, given the size of the universe and the amount of planets within it, i think it is safe to say that most weeks someone hits the jackpot" "whether or not the product of that goes on to be an intelligent civilization however, is a whole different lottery"
so to put it in as short terms as possible. yes, we were a product of luck, after all wouldn't someone have to strike it lucky eventually with millions or even billions of possible entries at the least?
