All of my songs are being listed by their Album Artist tags...that's a problem

My title says it all I think, I have quite a few individual songs from compilation albums on my phone and Winamp lists them all by Album Artist, while I enjoy the ability to sort or search by Album Artist, I primarily search and sort by the Artist tag because most of my compilation albums simply have the 'Various Artists' tag. Also, that causes problems when I scrobble my tracks to Last.FM since it would show Various Artists as the artist for a track.

When I searched this forum for people having this issue, I noticed that the default used to be the opposite of this, if I'm just missing a toggle setting somewhere I'd be quite happy if someone showed me where that was. However, if you simply changed one for the other I guess I'll be the one to say, "We don't ALL want it this way."
