*beats s1138 down*

Ignore the girl raping monkey. he chatters to much.

Have you changed the virtual memory settings?
Have you tried changing the amount of buffering that winamp does?

You edit the VMS in the control panel/system/performance

If you've always been having this problem, it could just be that you have a really crappy hdd that just heats up too much, thereby messing up with your processor, causing the stuttering.

From the most likely to the least, I'll check these:

IRQ conflict
Wrong PCI Bus Master IDE driver
Faulty IDE controller on motherboard
And go through the (gasp) process of reinstalling Windows?? I don't think philtheodebuzzard wants to go through that mental torture. It is just like bondage or fetish.

If DMA isn't enabled on the IDE channel your hard drive is on, try enabling it. A 30 gig hard drive has to be at least ata/33 right?
Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" > double click the IDE channel your hard drive is on > Advanced Settings > Change "Transfer Mode" to "DMA if available" on the appropriate device. If you're not sure where your hard drive is, change transfer mode to "DMA if available" on all ide channels and devices.

Might help, might not Worth a try though

heh?

I agree with s1138, but thats just me.(Thats pretty much my solution too, its not soo bad b/c I have 2 HDD and I store all my needed stuff on my other HDD when needing to format. So don't lose mp3's and downloads I need.)

What OS are you running?

If you're running Win2000, wouldn't you get better performance from an NTFS file system?

no thats what it was set up as before I re-installed it?
When I reformatted I changed the file system to see if it would make a difference but no joy, I think it could be the on board sound card I have? anyone else had problems with these.
