I only want to say, You are not the only one...
Sometimes I have had the same phenomen with my older Winamp-Version and without the "Winamp Essential Pack", although I have unchecked "Allow multiple instances". The upgrading and the essential pack are not the reason for this phenomen, and I don't think, that the icon pack would be a reason for it.
For me it has happened not only with double-clicking on a song in one of my music-folders, it has also happened, when I tried to open a pls- or m3u-link of a very interesting radio station during surfing in Facebook, and I had already running another radio stream in the first instance. I did not want that in the past. But next time I know already what to do with the second instance instead of closing it, because I have 2 newer plugins (from the plugin-search-category "Image"), and one of them would be very useful for the second instance (without playing music there)...
Greetings from Sabine Klare Aka Sternenmaschinebine
PS, without wanting to go far away from this theme, here I want to mention the two plugins for You, ImageAmp v1.0 and Image'In Winamp 1.01 (I myself cannot go to "search plugins" now to give You the links, but You can try it Yourself later)...

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....161361#plugins is really needed if experiencing issues.

also it is possible for Winamp under normal operation to open another instance:
  • depending on how long it's taking to load (if it goes too long then it'll assume the original instance is blocked / crashed and then create a new one)
  • you've run it at a different UAC level to the existing version (not knowing the original OS being used that may or may not be issue)
  • incorrectly disabling multi-instance blocking
  • a legitimate bug

Sabine: ImageAmp and Image in Winamp could both be causing your issues as they're not fully compliant with newer Winamp releases and could even be a cause of the issues you're seeing.

i agree you should do what DrO is saying, however...

this is an OLD issue. please see this link, and the links IN this link:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=316323

imo, several very similar bugs are conflating, but the central issue afaict is that multiple instances simply doesn't work at all.

Oh, my details were not complete...
My both plugins "ImageAmp" and "Image in Winamp" have come much later (2 months ago), after this phenomen had happened a few times (last December at the first time), but I have forgotten to mention it. Maybe they can be also responsible for this phenomen or not, but I don't know that. It does not allways happen, it has happened only a few times, maybe caused by my computer itself...
I am very glad to have stayed at the "old" Winamp 5.581 after so many days of a very difficult decision (because I need really the "old" Milkdrop 2.21), and I think, both plugins could be compatible with 5.5+ versions of Winamp...
And now I will take a look to this link in the post above, but at first I want to send my post now, before my text could be away because of my "old" Firefox 5 (I don't want the "new" Firefox 6)...
Greetings again
