What plug-in (s) do I need to send high resolution audio files to my outboard DAC?

I'd like to play high-resolution audio files though the spdif output of my ASAUS Xonar STX soundcard and send it to my Musical Fidelity DAC for conversion and upsampling.

What plug-in (s) do I need to accomplish this, and how do I install them?

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks!

Bill

No plugins required to use SPDIF. Just make sure the OS is setup correctly. And then make sure you are using the default Nullsoft DirectSound output plugin.

(Maybe going senile, but I don't remember doing anything else to get it to work on my XP PC which is hooked into my AV Amp via SPDIF)

Do you already have the PC playing audio through your SPDIF? Have you tested it from Control Panel\Sounds just by playing any old random Windows Sample?

Thanks for the response. O do already have it playing thru my spdif to my DAC. But when I play hi resolution files @ either 88.2hz or 96HZ my new Musical Fidelity DAC indicates it is only receiving them @ 44.1HZ. Do I need a plugin (ASIO or Wasapi?) to transmit the signal from Winamp to the DAC in high res?

Thanks!

Sorry, can't answer that bit, have to wait for someone else to help.

I just throw standard FLACs at my HiFi via SPDIF.

Yes, you need ASIO or WASAPI plugins. They are able to reconfigure the playing device format to match the input.

As an option you may consider to change the default format (Playback devices->Properties->Advanced->Default format) for your STX card output to the 24 bit 96000 hz stream. Everything will be upsampled to the common 96000 with DirectSound plugin. For a moment it is downsampling everything to 44100, that is what you have set in device properties. The DirectSound plugin is unable to switch the playing device format, it is sticking to prescribed default.

Ouch. I had a confuse time just like the one you have when a child asking you where did he come from.

You are really need to make friends with a forum search function, it saves a lot of time!

Just ask the forum search for ASIO or WASAPI keywords. The top 10 threads results for each of the cases does cover up amost every solution. Those additional modules are made by third parties, they are not official and their appreciation varies. Suggesting is not a copy-paste work but trials.

I'd go with some WASAPI plugin but that's just me, likewise the ASIO could easily be more worthy to you.
