How to get current artist and title of playing stream

So I have a plugin up and running that gets the artist and title of currently playing local files, but I just can't figure out how to do that for steaming music aka. web radio. Any hints?
All I got so far is getting the name of the playlist entry, but there it's just one string I'd need to parse, and if the user changes the playlist format I'd be out of luck.

generally the title of the playlist entry is all that is available since most streaming won't provide that actual tag information. if it is available then it would be returned via the normal lookup, otherwise there is no specific format (though "artist - title" is common but never guaranteed) for stream titles since it otherwise makes stream-ripping simpler and stations don't like that.

Hm, so I assume Winamp does the same internally?
At least when using the Bento skin, I see Artist and Title displayed separately in the GUI for most streams.

bento attempts to guess what it would be against common title patterns from what i remember.
