namelookups: What Are They For?
So I'm looking to reduce the amount of bandwidth my stream uses, ie, using multiple streams with different bitrates and I came across something I never gave much thought: namelookups. Why would the server need to do DNS lookups? Whose being looked up? The transcoder or listeners? Is it necessary? And finally, does it use bandwidth?

it was an option in the v1 DNAS so was put in the v2 DNAS. that's all i know so you'd have to find out why / when it was added to the v1 DNAS though i guess some people would prefer to see a DNS name instead of the raw IP.
it's done on any connections made to the DNAS be it from a source or from an external client connection. probably not, hence why its default is off. only you can decide if you want it and if it's something that will help you. possibly but as it's just a call to an api in the network handling it would depend on the OS implementation of that as to what is actually going on and hence what resources are used with it. -daz |
