Stumped and beating my head on desk...

So I installed sc myself and it all seemed fine. Started fine. No errors. listening on ports.
Nothing can connect.
Hunted down firewalls and proxies. Nothing.
read through dozens of config files. Nothing obviously wrong.

Tried your install script. Created a mirror image.
Repeated all steps. Rinse and repeat.
By all indications it's working, but no connections. Something about passwords or cipher in the logs. Searched and found some things about uvox and dj cipher, tried them and no change.

Any ideas? Losing blood rapidly due to subdural hematoma.... not a happy brain...

Port 8000 I'm assuming?

I couldn't connect either. Most firewalls on routers don't get in the way of port forwards so the only thing I can think of is that either IP tables (or whatever kernel level network management daemon, (firewall)) is not configured to allow the port or your router still doesn't have the port forwarded to the correct computer on your LAN (if you have one.) Is this a hosted/rented server or a server you have on-site?

Back from the ER

I think I got it working, at least its listening. The network stuff is doing okay as far as I can tell. Now I'm having an issue with authentication and cipher.

Its hosted on a vps, I have full control over the kernel, etc. They claim there's nothing in any of their gateways that would be causing a problem.

So I can connect with the admin and all, but dsp is not working. keep getting the authentication use v.1 thing, then a bad user/password message with v.1. No non alpha characters, I'm certain the cipher matches in the dsp_sc.ini and on the trans.conf. No nonalpha there either.

I can now connect to and see the DNAS pages. From here it looks like you don't have a source connected which is odd because the auto installer linux script installs sc_trans as well and downloads content to play if you didn't specify or if it couldn't find your media. Obviously you've done something to the Transcoder. I'm guessing you want to replace it with the SHOUTcast DSP. Can you post your DNAS and DSP logs?

You have multiple separate issues. Too many in-fact that would not be easier to just clear everything and re-run the install script and not modify anything until you've got it working first.

ok. that's what they said in the ER too : "It might be better if you just get a new head"

I'm finishing up some SQL crud for a client today, I'll do that when I get a chance, so can I bug you again in a day or two?

i'd like to see what the config files for the DNAS and the Transcoder are to be causing the Transcoder (as it seems from the DNAS log) to be sending random aspects of the DJ connection as part of the headers during the connection handshaking between the two.

If you have issues with Winamp or still want to get it, ensure
you get v5.666 build 3516 and the required plug-in updates

not sure how config files became logs though i guess it doesn't matter now if the Transcoder is able to connect ok to the DNAS (as the logs are showing).

the only issue appearing in the logs is the DJ source cannot connect to the Transcoder instance. though i'm not sure what this 'nullcast plugin' you're referring to is. based on the log messages i'd have to assume it is only v1 compatible and if so then it might not be handling the <name>:<password> format correctly.

or you may not have fully configured things in the Transcoder's config file and it's calendar.xml file for it to be correctly recognised - i would think that is the most likely case based on the Login denied from messages. so really just the Transcoder config files would be needed...

ok, so if you're using the Source DSP i.e. http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=329858 then you'd be best using that in v2 mode and enabling djport2 in your config file e.g. djport=4489 and use that in the Source DSP's port field.

also you've not specified a name for djlogin_1 e.g. djlogin_1=dj
as without that it is very likely to be causing some or all of the DJ connection issue.

you'd also need to attach your calendar.xml file so that can be checked to see if there is even a DJ event specified - without that then the Transcoder will never allow the DJ connection even if the sc_trans.conf is correctly setup.

ok, thanks guys for helping me on this. apparently this is confusing the heck out of me. I followed the instructions on the authentication, the v2 port and the calendar. Still no joy.

ugh

could there be an authentication hash error if the server's in a different timezone? do the times need to match up? is there an offset?

different timezones won't have any effect.

i've finally had a chance to try things with your config files and i'm able to connect to the Transcoder via a DJ connection in v1 and v2 modes without issues.

i did this all on the same machine with the following settings:

v1 DJ connection
Server Address: localhost
Port: 4487
DJ / User ID: left blank (though i also tried it with the internal Source DSP build which would take sinn in that field)
Password: sinn:sinnisteri (and same again with the internal Source DSP build where it was just set as sinnisteri)
Legacy Mode: checked

v2 DJ connection
Server Address: localhost
Port: 4489
Stream ID: left as 1 - is ignored
DJ / User ID: sinn
Password: sinnisteri
Legacy Mode: unchecked

So from what i can see, there shouldn't be a problem with getting a DJ connection with the config files as they are.

Ok, so then there's something else going on. I can certainly celebrate knowing for certain what it isn't. There are so few certainties in life, no?

Thank you gentleman (Tink and Daz) for your time, this was an immense help. Now I"m off to find the needle in server config haystack.

Peace.

Joy at last....

So I found a little page on google about four pages back that said ports 4477-4490 were sometimes blocked because of some trojan. huh.

I have no idea if that had anything to do with it, but I did change the ports and lo!!! She works!

Thanks for your patience guys....

spawn problems(new)

Hey just a quick note: I've been getting this

sc_trans[32452] general protection ip:4983c0 sp:7fe92effc890 error:0 in sc_trans[400000+4c6000]
sc_trans[30046] general protection ip:4983c0 sp:7fa7e34f5890 error:0 in sc_trans[400000+4c6000]
sc_trans[910] general protection ip:4983c0 sp:7f346fbf6890 error:0 in sc_trans[400000+4c6000]

Those are usually an indication that a binary has been either poorly built or not built for the correct architecture. Or it may be missing some dependencies.

Just for the sake of me focusing my efforts in the right area, would y'all agree?

never seen those errors before. all i can say on the matter is that the builds are built and targeted at CentOS5 so i'm not sure how that compares to the linux flavour you are using.

Well, my brother, I certainly never meant to imply y'all built an inferior product. Truth is I'm sure if this is the issue it has something to do with the way I'm using it, or where I'm putting it.
There are a lot of issues. I was hoping someone might have seen that situation before. I just want to say that the support you guys give here on these forums is incredibly valuable. I appreciate it.

track errors(narcolepsy); do loop

So I'm searching for any problems in my server config that could account for the transcoder dying repeatedly and every time the last message in the trans log is the following:

2012-04-11 15:08:49 E msg:[DJPROTOCOLUVOX] Message had invalid terminator, tossing and retrying

Could this have anything to do with it?

Maybe, but without knowing exactly what you had connected to the DJ port at the time I can only guess you're using something other than the official SHOUTcast DSP that doesn't properly format the source data correctly in all configurations. If however you are, please enable logging in the DSP for the connection and attach the logs from the DSP.

Improperly formatted source connection data shouldn't cause the Transcoder to crash but it's possible if it's something that wasn't forseen to be caught, trapped, and handled.

Again, only a guess based on a literal interpretation of the error message you posted within context of which it was posted. It requires more information I believe.

Yeah, ok. I am using the free version of winamp and the nullsoft encoder plugin from the shoutcast site. All up to date versions.

It might be my twisted, sleep deprived imagination, but it seems like its the same song(s) that are causing the problem. Could it be some kind of encoding problem on certain mp3s? What do I know? I just had a conversation with the Easter Bunny and someone that died a decade ago. My place is a mess.

Here's what the dsp log shows:
