If you're going to read that many books, it looks like those are good choices.
2011 = 171 How many in 2010 again? edit - upon further research, I believe you had hit 120. How many do you predict for 2012? Don't forget to live before you die.

Westlake 004.....Dortmunder, Book 02: Bank Shot by Donald E. Westlake 005.....Dortmunder, Book 14: Get Real by Donald E. Westlake The Dortmunder series was started in the 1970's and they're hilarious. I skipped to book 14 because I wanted to see how well the characters did in the modern age. The Westlake books are fairly short at about 260 pages each, and I have two whole caper/robbery series' by him, the Dortmunder series (14 books) and the Parker series (penned under "Richard Stark", 24 books). Nora Roberts / J. D. Robb's "In Death" series is 43 books long, though Ive read the first one so far. So 81 books with just those three series'. At any rate, I don't set any goals; I just read until I'm done. |

My wife has read all the Nora Roberts "J.D. Robb" books that she's been able to find (probably all of them actually), in addition to all the regular Nora Roberts too, but you probably wouldn't like the non-Robb ones; more for women.
I have some for sale too if you're interested. I've sold hundreds of books/CDs/DVDs over the years but only received 14 ratings, all of which were perfect. Don't forget to live before you die.

If you guys get a chance, read Hedy's Folly. It's about Hedy Lamar. If the truth ever gets stranger than fiction, it's the life of Hedy Lamar. This was one of those things I was gonna read for an hour.... and ended up reading the whole thing.

You think you might be able to give some sort of review on any fantasy/sci-fi books that you enjoyed? I'm looking for new material to read... Doesn't help when most of my friends play video games over a book any day.

Don't know about reviews, I always reference someone to Wikipedia about a book series.
David Weber is a favorite sci-fi author. Honor Harrington Set 2000+ years from now, the series deals with Honor, an officer of the Royal Manticoran Navy. Fresh out of the RMN's Advanced Tactical Course, she is given command of a ship that has just had an experimental weapon installed. After embarrassing the opposition in a mock battle, she is sent to a back-woods planet to monitor the star system, where an asshole that attempted to rape her in the past is currently in command. He hi-tails it out of there, leaving her alone. Despite that, she brings back the morale of the officers on her ship and Basilisk Station (the first book is On Basilisk Station) by getting the operations running smoothly. Meanwhile, the People's Republic of Haven star system is bent on expanding its star system for monetary resources to support the billions of people on its dole. On the list is the Basilisk star system; the main planet there has a resource of valuable drugs. Haven moves in, Honor kicks their asses (barely), and reignites a decades old war between the Manticore system and the Haven system. Luckily, Manticore is more technologically advanced, but Haven has the manpower. Throughout the series Honor begins to fit together pieces and learns that the war between them isn't what it seems. And it does something to Honor that you learn very early on is a bad thing to do: pisses her off. The series is very space war lasers-pew-pew-pew, with missile ranges in the tens of millions of kilometers later on as the technology advances. It's also very political. The books switch perspective between Haven, Manticore and other systems while reading, and it's written so that reading from the Haven point of view is kind of boring (to make you hate the Havenites even more). There are also only two alien species in this series, one you meet in the first book (and never again), and the Treecats; sentient (and far more intelligent than they let on) and telempathic 6-limbed cat-like animals that form bonds with humans so strong that the death of either the human or the Treecat can drive the other to kill themselves from the loss. Honor has one, Nimitz, and he saves her live on numerous occasions (and has a dislike of environmental suits. Because, you know... the plumbing). Out of all the sci-fi I've read, this is my favorite series. Also excellent reads by Weber: Dahak Trilogy Empire of Man series (3rd place favorite from Weber) Safehold series (2nd place favorite) Other sci-fi stuff I've greatly enjoyed: Torin Kerr series. Short series, 5 books. Old Man's War (just read anything by Scalzi...) Altered Carbon series (short, 3 books). I think that's about it for sci-fi. Everything else I'm seeing is either detective/police procedural or urban fantasy (or a mix of the two). The only straight-up fantasy series I've read is Robert Jordan's (and later Brandon Sanderson) The Wheel of Time series. Expanding on Sanderson, he has an amazing fantasy series (but more gritty than WoT, so I have a hard time saying it's straight up fantasy); Mistborn. Right now, it's 3 books plus a novella, but Sanderson has said it will be a trilogy of trilogies. I highly suggest the Mistborn series. The "magic" in exceptionally well done, and has strict but easy rules to it. Similar to the Mistborn series is Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series, short with only 6 books. Think ancient Rome with elemental magic. On to the urban fantasy genre, I have a few of those: Repairman Jack, the series that got me into this whole reading mess. The Vampire Files series (no, they don't sparkle), 1930's mobster-run Chicago. A reporter has to solve his own murder, when he wakes up dead after swimming with the fishes. Starts solving other crimes in the other books, along with giving criminals their buckwheats. The Hollows series. Genetically modified tomatoes in the 60's starts a plague that kills millions. A lot of those that survive, however, aren't human and this secret comes out (to ensure humanity and the non-human's survival). 40 years after 'The Turn', witch and law enforcement detective Rachel Morgan, with the help of her team-mates, a vampire and a pixie, solve supernatural and non-supernatural crimes. This series is much better and more fun than it sounds. It's on my list here for a reason. Felix Castor series. Only 5 books so far. Series revolves around Felix Castor, a freelance exorcist that solves crimes by communicating with the other side. The Dresden Files. Harry Dresden, sorcerer, solving crimes and kicking ass. Also, kicking ass. The Nightside. P.I. John Taylor has a magical gift to find anything. Shit always hits the fan when he's asked to find something for someone, and very usually hits suddenly, violently and all over the place. Secret Histories series. Same universe as the Nightside series. Same author and has tie-ins with each other. Monster Hunter series. Short, only 3 books so far, but a fun read. The other stuff that Larry Correia has out is really good, too. Agent Pendergast series. 99% police procedural with just a twist of the supernatural. Some straight up police procedural/investigative series': Jack Reacher John Rain (an assassin series) The Butcher's Boy (trilogy, also an assassin series) Harry Bosch Dortmander (robber/caper series, hilarious. Things never go right for the guy) Prey There are a few more that I'm only a couple books into, but like so far: Alex Cross Cotton Malone (gritty, but like the National Treasure movies) In Death (set in the 2050's, but doesn't really feel it. I think technology progressed much faster than the author thought it would) My Cream of the Crop picks: Honor Harrington Safehold Mistborn Dresden Files Jack Reacher Prey |
