You're safe with Windows XP, especially if you're running your own MySQL server on a different machine for SAM to connect to and use. If you absolutely have to get a Windows 7 machine from off the shelf then I would recommend upgrading
it to Windows XP the moment you take it home. That suggestion may not be practical (buying a full copy of Windows XP at the same time as the computer) but it would very probably be worth it on just bypassing all the potential audio headaches of Vista/7.
I was able to get the trial version of SAM working ok
on my little stock Acer ApsireOne notebook with a local MySQL (for Windows) server, and sc_serv + sc_trans, running on it at the same time.
