Adding Music from CDs to a Portable Device
First, I'd like to say that I've been searching around the forum and all the other extensive help things this site has, and cannot find anything that addresses this completely. I'm pretty much at my wits end and if I did happen to miss the answer then I'll feel very foolish >.>
Anyway, I bought Winamp Pro yesterday because I have many CDs I'd like to put on my MP3 player (It's a Philips GoGear Vibe if that makes a difference). I spent a lot of time converting every CD into an mp3 format, following the tutorial exactly. But when I try to send them to the transfers it says, "Some of these tracks were in an incompatable format and will not be transferred" (and by some it means all) I tried converting it into all the other formats and pretty much everything I could think of. Basically I just don't understand why it's not transferring. Other maybe useful information: I have Windows 7 I don't know about any plug-ins I have I'm assuming I have the latest version of Winamp since I downloaded it yesterday If you need to know anything else just let me know. Most of this stuff goes pretty much over my head so as easy to understand as possible would be great XD |

Hi BiaBlue,
If the mp3s you made play in Winamp, then the ripping and encoding was successful. Your device's user manual says to use the 'drag and drop' method with Windows Explorer from the folder(s) where your mp3s are to the music folder on your device. Maybe this device does not provide the info needed for Winamp to correctly make the transfers. If you want a report on your Winamp installation (including the plug-ins installed), download, install, and run the "One for Nunz" plug-in. http://nunzioweb.com/daz/14nunz.html Look at the bottom of page (linked above) for the download link. Okay, yes the songs still play in Winamp fine.
I followed most of the directions well but the zip file part totally lost me ;-; I attached a text file of the notepad Nunz pulled up, I hope that's okay. |

You can try removing the Portable Media Player plug-ins you don't need (shutdown WA and move them to an unrelated folder for safe keeping), to see if that helps. These plug-ins are listed in your report and are located in the 'Winamp/Plugins' folder.
I only have the generic USB Device Plug-in installed. Then again, I usually use the Win Explorer 'drag & drop' method for transferring mp3s to my portable device. Any compelling reason you don't want to follow your device's user manual instructions? When you have your MP3 player plugged into the PC, start Winamp. Now look on the right at Devices and you will see your player. Right click and you should get the page of preferences for your media player (preferences \ Media Library \ Portables\ Device name) Look into the pages here.
As your device is "new" to winamp, it may not have everything correct here. In Preferences\Media Library\Portables\Device Name\ you can tweak how tracks are moved to the phone. Notice the format conversino options. Check these are the same as what you have been ripping your tracks to. (Otherwise it will try converting everything again) Look at the ADVANCED page. On here is it important to correct the paths so Winamp knows where your phone is. Filename format needs to include the full path to where your music is stored on your device. Checking your manual shows it is something like this: E:\music\<Artist>\<Album>\## - <Trackartist> - <Title> On your PC open the normal windows file manager and look at your MP3 player and check where it wants to put the tracks. At the very least you may need to correct that E: to match your own PC. Again on the advanced page, notice the "Supported Formats" section. Check this matches what your MP3 player supports. According to your manual your player only handles MP3;WMA; |

@Aminifu - I tried the drag method and that seemed to work, so thank you.
@Batter - I also did what you said and now it seems to be doing exactly what it's supposed to, so thank you. Again, I'm sorry for all the trouble but thank you VERY much for helping me so quickly

I hadn't noticed those options before, they take several seconds to show up on my system after plugging in my device. I assumed I didn't have them because I'm only using the generic USB portable device plug-in. All I needed to tell that plug-in was the drive letter my device is using. That's a lot of stuff to set up (even though it only has to be done once). Now I know why my songs were not transferred to the correct folder on my device. Naive thinking on my part to believe the device would tell WA what to do. My portable media player is not a phone and I had tried using the 'Send to:' command from the playlist editor. I've learned something today, thanx. ![]() Even so, I think I'll stick with using 'drag & drop' from Win Explorer as my primary method. It's simple and quick enough for me. The auto-sync WA provides is pretty cool, but I don't really need it. Once I've vetted and added a song to my WA collection, I seldom need to change it. So what I've copied to my media player rarely needs updating. It also does a good job making it's own playlists (when files are in the right folders). It's now an obsolete product, wish I had bought more than one.

@BiaBlue - you are no trouble. Glad to help. There is a lot of little tweakable features in Winamp. Very customisable and tunable to your needs. Even some of the regulars still learn from a post like this that shares knowledge.
![]() @Aminifu: There are so many different devices working in different ways that pages like this were needed. And then expanded over the years to cover all the silly little differences between devices. For my Blackberry phone, not only did it not have the folders correct, but it didn't know about FLAC support. Which I have now added to that handy list. But, like you, I am a "drag and drop" man. Mainly as I am "old school" IT and I prefer to have control over the actual files. I also got used to it as my first MP3 players were dumb devices that needed tracks copied over in the correct order. Winamp's SendTo->Device option copies tracks in an odd order. Fine for better quality MP3 players that can alpha-sort, but not so good for the Chinese knock-offs. |
