Sorting: By artist "The"
Problem: Whenever I sort by artist, the ones that start with "the" get sorted by the next word. It eliminates in a way the prefix "the". How do I stop this from happening?
Note: I have googled, searched through the forums, looked under preferences in winamp with no avail. I'm starting to believe I'm blind I can't see any option to edit this. I even took a pic of what I'm talking about. Link to imageshack. thanks for your time, wiz. |

it would be a nice user pref to let us decide which articles winamp should ignore (or not)
The, Les, Los, La, A, El, De, etc... and in which fields, Artist, AA, Album, and so on PENN STATE Radio or http://www.LION-Radio.org/ -- BUG #1 = Winamp skips short tracks Wish #1 = Multiple Column Sorting Wish #2 = Add TCMP/Compilation editing |

Wow, I love that feature. Prevents me from having to guess if something's listed under "Rolling Stones" or "The Rolling Stones" as either way it'll be listed under "R". And prevents a thousand bands from lining up under "T" which makes no sense at all. I wouldn't mind a user pref but I definitely think it makes more sense the way it is.
In one of my other pursuits I have to keep track of colleges and universities. I can't stand datasets which list "University of Texas" and "University of California" under "U" instead of "T" and "C". We end up with lists of colleges 75% of which get filed under "U"... |

If you want to locate ONLY The Pink Floyd and none of Pink Floyd then use speechmarks.
Type "The Pink Floyd" into the search and you will not see anything for "Pink Floyd" I had to learn this trick so I could find my tracks from the band "The The". Like Archguy notes, it makes more sense to ignore "the" otherwise locating tracks from most bands may well miss some. |

some users, (not me, but some), don't want to have exemptions made. they don't want the articles ignored.
what bothers me about the winamp implementation, is that they hardwire making "the" a mandatory exemption, and ONLY that article. at slim, they let the user specify any or no articles. also, it would be good to say "ignore it in artist fields, but not album fields" or whatever, again letting the user decide. i realize more perfs lead to more complexity, and this is not a big deal to me, but i think its doable, since its been that way at slim for years.
