Spectrum analyzer display (classic skin)
I just recently upped my Winamp (pro) to 5.63 (not sure what my last one was, it was from maybe 4-5 years ago... 5.3-something?).
Hopefully I can explain it clearly... Since upgrading, I've noticed the bars in the analyzer display (I use "Thin" bands) seem skewed way over to the right relative to the frequencies they represent. In other words, where a 5kHz tone used to display itself about 1/4 the way from the left edge it now displays a line for that same tone almost 2/3 over to the right. A 16kHz tone now displays at the very right edge whereas before it was about 4/5ths from the edge (leaving some room to "see" more of a song's high-freq content represented). Any possible way to restore it to how it was before? (short of reverting back to my older version)? If it matters: Win XP with a duo-core AMD (Athlon, I think? not sure) Appreciate any info. |

Hi jim3456,
I assume you've tried switching to thick and back to thin. It may not help, but look in the General Preferences - Playback - Equalizer tab. Try switching the frequency bands setting to "Winamp" if it is set to "ISO Standard". Are you sure the 16KHz tone was that far from the edge? After all, that is the end of the range and maybe what you had before was displaying incorrectly. Windows 10 Home 64-bit v21H2 desktop - Logitech Z906 5.1 speaker system |

Yea it was already set to Winamp frequency bands... I went ahead and switched it to ISO and then back (also to thick and back to thin), but no change either way.
It was definitely away from the edge a bit, as a 44.1kHz file theoretically has an upper limit of 22.05kHz. Anything from about 15kHz up is now all pressed up against the far right edge of the display. I'm assuming a logarithmic frequency scaling must've been applied to it somewhere along the way (guessing it was to spread out the low end better), however it was always the high end I found myself focused on (for one thing, you could immediately tell a low-quality or transcoded song file by the lack of any response above 16kHz even if the sound of it didn't make it obvious). Maybe some way to switch between the new & the old scalings might be in order since each one has a benefit, but on opposite ends of the spectrum display. |

Hi,
You can check the frequency scaling setting for the in_mp3.dll input plug-in. Go to General Preferences - Plug-ins - Input, open the configuration decoder tab for that plug-in. Windows 10 Home 64-bit v21H2 desktop - Logitech Z906 5.1 speaker system |

none of what has been suggested above would make any difference. there were changes to the vis and how it determines and shows things years back (which from the sounds of it was still 'new' compared to the version you used). some people didn't like it and complained avidly at the time but it's stayed as the vis was _never_ meant as something to rely on and is just a visual indicator / bit of eye candy.

I kindof figured it might come down to something like that. The flavor of my 'eye candy' has (to my disappointment) been changed. It would've been great to be able to at least choose between them.
I guess I'll continue using it for awhile see if I can get used to it before I revert back to 5.33 (I think it was), it's just weird looking after so many years of seeing straight bar lines by frequency (now the low end looks like it's forming little "mountains" or something ). Been using Winamp since v2.5. Appreciate the replies guys. |

each to their own but reverting to a massively old version considering all of the fixes (including security related ones) over a visual element i think is excessive but is your call.
