better fps in desktop mode

i love your milkdrop plugin...only thing is, it runs slow in desktop mode (atleast for me and my friend...).
i use .99d and the settings i ahve it at right now is 1/2 res, no hw blit, auto text size, 24x18 mesh size, fps unlimited, and not using multimon. i run my desktop at 1280x960 and i get ~7fps. my system is as follows : p3 933mhz, 256mb ram, tnt2 ultra, under win2k sp2...and i guess thats all thats relevant. i had no processes running in the background when i benchmarked. a friend of mine also got the same results using the same settings, except he has 512mb ram, an athlon 600, a geforce w/ ddr, under win98. i've read previous posts and it seems that other people get the same fps rates...i would jus love to have this running smoothly, since right now it lags my mouse response a little bit and other apps.
