About half the people on my street are Section 8 housing assistance. They have the same kinds of jobs they had 20 years ago when I bought this house. They weren't on welfare then. Why are rents so high? Because landlords can rent properties for more because the state is carrying half the families on my street. No public assistance. You'd have to rent these houses for 30% of what people made or they'd be empty. Rent would be half or less. Then you could make $10 an hour and really live on it. And that's the way it was until the early 90's. You could flip burgers and rent a place without needing public assistance. This house would have rented for $450 then. It's now about $1200. And wages didn't budge. Why didn't wages budge? Government got BIG after Reagan. Essentially every working person is working for less than half pay.
