windowshade mode won't stay down

I have a problem that just started today - When I open the main window and try to open my files to add a new title, the window goes to windowshade mode!! How do I kee[ the window down like it should be??
I know, lame question, but this tiny thing is driving me buggy...
Help a dummy, save your soul??
