winamp stopped working

for some reason when i try to play files, the progress bar moves across rapidly as if it were playing, and a pop up asks where i want the .wav output to.
but no sound.
if i download a upgrade, what is the uninstall process for the existing program or just install new?
in same folder as existing?

Preferences (Ctrl-p) > Plugins > Output > Select "Nullosft waveOut plug-in..." > Close
