can't play mp3s, can play cds

I use the line-out jack to plug my headphones in, to hear the cds. But, When I try to play mp3s, it shows the audio bar on the upper right of winamp jump up, then it just stalls and doesn't play. I tried d/ling the N.O.P. plug-in, then it just plays the mp3, but no sound. I tried plugging the headphones into every other jack like line-in. I tried the directsound plug-in, and changed the driver, but to no avail.

What should I do?

Full sys specs please, including Windows OS & Soundcard.

Do MP3's play ok with other players, eg. Win Media Player?
