When software isn't the culprit, hardware may be to blame. There is an audio wire that connects your CD-ROM drive to your sound card so that you can play audio CD's (and HEAR THEM! ) it is possible that your wire is disconnected, broken, frayed, or something. If you've been under the hood of a PC before you should probably be able to spot it, if you're leery about going in, ask a friend with some experience. If not, keep exploring software/windows related possibilities. (Check your Windows Mixer CD Volume Level, or Creative Mixer Levels (or whatever card you use's mixer))
