Mcafee Help

Hey everyone, i'm in desperate need of help.

i dont have a virus scan program on my comp, i just figured that i wouldnt open up attachments from people i dont know, and generally i know which attachments are viruses, ect ect. anyways i ended up getting one of those annoying msn messanger viruses. so well i thought i'll get a v-program and take it off.

well i got mcafee from a friend and installed it, no problem, i restarted and everything was fine, then i installed the new virus pack, restarted and at the startup screen my dam comp froze!! i thought it just froze for no reason, (it sometimes does that) so i restarted again, it got to the startup screen and froze again!! i thought what the hell. so i tried booting up into dos it didnt work, i tried booting up into safe mode , didnt work, so i got out my trusty boot disk and did it that way, i got into dos, but it wouldnt let me edit anything, i couldnt get into windows that way, i couldnt get into any folders!! i couldnt do anything except switch drives. then i thought i;ll try running autoexec . it worked, but then mcafee started to scan and then froze my comp again. by this time i was pissed, so i thought i'll unhook my second drive which has mcafee installed and i should be able to boot up because it wont find the scan.exe . so anyways i unhooked that drive, booted up, and the fuckin thing froze again, so i booted into dos via my boot disk, ran the autoexec (couldnt find mcafee) and it never froze, so then i booted into windows from dos and it worked, i got in no problem.

so heres my problem, i need to find a way to edit my autoexec from, windows , or hot swap my second drive in once windows is loaded so i can uninstall mcafee.

or if any of you people out there have any good ideas, could you please help me, before i throw my comp out the window, and go kill my friend who gave me mcafee

thanx

Like Gary Condit, I'm utterly clueless

All I can tell you is McAfee sucks tennis balls through tennis rackets!

For a good virus detection, use this:

This isn't unlike typical Mcafee behavior. I've had several people bring their new PC's (how come so many stupid people by "CompUSA Brand" PCs? aggghhh) into my shop and tell me they updated their McAfee virus protection and the machine wouldn't fully boot after that . I dont know that you can really "fix" it. You might want to try and boot safe mode, if you can get in via safe mode uninstall the POS right away, reboot again, and pray. The best advice anyone can give another person reguarding McAfee is, don't use it; it's a hunk of garbage. What really fries me though is that even when someone gets it installed without it killing their OS, alot of viruses seem to get past it . Find a copy of Nortons (or whatever you want, but I've had a great track record with Norton's)

yeah it sounds like another case of Mcrappy buttrape. Best bet is to format your main parition (the one thats damaged) and start over with a clean install. (Then) Backup your vital files stored on other partitions and reformat those too (to thoroughly purge your system of mcdumbass remnants). Put everything back (ugh, ready to sue yet?) and you're done or just fix your main drive and hope everything else is a-okay. (if you dont have problems after, then the rest of your drives should be fine...)

[note:] ugh, only 1 post of memberishness left [/note]

[edit] yes invis, you were right. You guessed the easiest fix in PC repair. You go girl. [edit]

errrrrr rage on the muther fuckers!!! i was hoping i could get around re-formatting, cus i just finished copying over 2 gigs of mp3s onto that drive, and my bro (the guy who i got them from) just moved away!!! errrrr and its all because of a crappy little msn virus!!

i should get my friend , a super computer geek, over here to give it a quick look over to make sure that i have to re-format and to make sure there isnt a way i can fix it, but more than likely i will have to reformat

yeah if you have someone who can give it a look then definitely do it... theres alot more you can figure out actually sitting in front of the thing compared to what I can tell you from however far away we are. Hopefully you can combine your brain energy and come up with a more viable solution then formatting (ugh). Good luck!

i fixed it!

yayyyy!!! i fixed my comp! with no help from my friend, he was out. anyways heres how i did it.

i was just about to go to bed and give up for the night when it hit me, just edit the autoexec.bat in wordpad, i opened it up in word, deleted the line that told my comp to run scan.exe on c:\ and then i shut down, plugged in my second hd, and powered up, everything was good, i got into windows , and fuckin mcafee in win picked up that crapy msn virus i got (btw there saved in your my documents, if anyone wants to know) i deleted the virus, and uninstalled mcafee, but heres the kicker, mcafee got the final blow, just after it finished uninstalling, like the exact second it was done, my comp froze, hehe mcafee got the last punch, but ohwell, mcafee's gunna get a nasty letter and complaint from me.... hehe.....

[pissy rant] god Mcafee sucks the biggest dick. I never get calls, call-backs, questions or complaints about Nortons. Only McAfee. Like clockwork. People please, its worth the 30 bucks or whatever for Norton's, no really it is. (Unless you *ahem* borrow a copy from a friend to try it out first...) [/pissy rant]. I wish the Mcrappy they were installing in no-name machines was that easy to get rid of.

PC + AOL 6.0 + McAfee Virus Scan = Compocalypse

I usually format my pc when i get a virus

virus scanners are too much of a waste of ram at startup

usually im smart enough not too download virus' in the first place

its only happened once

three words: are you crazy? (<--regarding no protection )

I've only ever had one Virus Scanner that was smarter then me. Nortons. Nortons won't even let you quietly infect yourself (I'm a lunatic, I've tried all the normal ways you infect yourself, and even some tricky ones, it always catches it (it even found one trying to mess with my boot sector with auto-protect DISABLED... jeez!)) How can you be without virus protection? Oh just for comparison purposes I added up norton things running in the background... (System Works 2001 Pro disc, but the program has of course been upgraded by LiveUpdate beyond the original version) the whole thing sitting in the background is using 3MB of memory (it drops to lower usage when you're doing something intense, i.e. photoshop). IMHO, 3 megs is a small price to pay for not having to constantly format to fix infections ... To each his own, I guess.

P.S. - Nofx... I like the addition to your sig
