Avatar Week

OK gang, beginning now, we have a week to give avatars a trial.
Please adhere to the rules and be responsible for your choosings.
If not, we'll lose this priviledge and likely will not receive anymore perks. Size is limited to 50 X 50 pixels.
I've included this poll to evaluate them, so please be honest.
Thanks,
Chev

Ps. Thx Jon

I think as long as it doesn't get abused and people dont do any stupid crap, it's just one more stupidly fun thing. It lets you give yourself some kinda "personal" touch, (and hopefully reduces the headache over custom titles). Ey, its all good.

By the way, to choose your avatar, go to "My Control Panel", choose "Edit Options", avatar info is at the bottom.

I don't think we should have them. It's just like having two sigs. And you know there's always gonna be some people with huge ones. It's just gonna be another useless thing that the mods have to waste more time on patrolling.

If you really want an avatar, put it in yer sig.

Then again... I do see the attraction of having something in your title area...

If we're gonna have this customization, I say make it an either or thing ... you can either customize your Avatar *or* have a custom Sig, but not both. Makes it a cluttered mess. Personally, I like the Avatar over the Sig, yah.

I was just saying that a 50 X 50 canvas is tricky to create an image for as any of you know who've made a mikro

I'm not really bothered either way. Are these size limits automatically enforced or is it another job for the moderators? If there are automatically enforced, I think we should have them but as Duk said, you should only have a sig or an avatar.

Especially for the peeps who, like me, are still on Dial-up.

why not switch signature mode off.. so nobody can do sigs anymore.. and only allow 50×50 avatars... then the readings wont be too distorded by the sigs.. and you wont have banners as sigs anymore either

I suppose a pola bar will now be in our future.

[edit] If you could just make it so that these little pics were able to be linkable and get rid of sigs, I think we'd have a winner here. It surely would cut down on the image garbage when scrolling down thru threads. Just my opinion. [/edit]

arrrrrg

i don't like these avatars, especially with the sigs, theres more pictures than there is content, which defeats the purpose of the forums, so i say we choose between sigs and avatars like someone suggested.

yea...I said it.

Just testing, this is all I had spur of the moment, lol. My purple av is on deviantart. Will have to find another one I guess.

This is pretty cool and although I agree, using an av and sig graphic is overkill, I do like the option for both. I think that as long is this new toy is not abused, we should have the option to use both. I only use my sig graphic in the first post I make in a new topic anyway, so I think from now on I'll just put a link to my latest published skin in the sig, no graphic. I like this and for those who don't, as mentioned you can always disable, one or both.

Cool deal all around I think .

Thanks Duk I used to make AV's and gameboard skins for Excite Chat and even competed in a few painting contests over there. I have TONS! and they are 102x116, so they would fit nicely on the main.bmp, lol. Definately something to consider. . I am supposed to be taking a skinning break, but of course I'm not. LOL. Been working on this latest one for almost a week and will have a finished product by Sat. I think.

I don't like them.

They make the place look untidy. Like a kiddies colouring book.

I don't like image sigs either. And the location field.

All these things add up to make the layout of the pages too flexible and untidy. The site has a nice clean and ordered design, but these three things together make the forum just cluttered and horrible looking.

I'm just off to deactivate them from my view

I like the avatars better than the sig. I can upload it, so I don't have to worry about hosting space, which is convenient. Sigs are cool for thematic things, like coordinating with the realease of a new skin or something. With both you don't have to sacrifice your forum identity (avatar) for advertising (sig). Just my take.

Now I think I prefer Avatars to signatures. I think we should have the option for both but a regulation should be "either/or". The reason we should still be able to have sigs (only if we give up our avatar) is for promoting new skins and URLs and similar.

Best of both worlds

I like the avatars because you don't have to scroll through the space the sigs take up however, text sigs tend to add a little humor to the forum. Besides, you can still link off a text sig without killing the speed it takes to download the image sig. Out of courtesy to the people on slow connections, keep an avatar and just have a text sig or just an image sig with no avatar. I've seen this work well in other forums.

There is only one reason I might not like avatars. Find scarface - his is really frikkin annoying.

Hehehe

now an animated Leatherface avatar would be pretty cool from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Damn, me and my B movies again. I'll have to keep a lookout for that scarface guy though that thing is blinding.

Avatars...

I think they add a lot of personality to the forums. I know that the icons at deviantART add a lot to the community. However, the vast majority of the people at deviantART have really nice icons, so it doesn't look cluttered. I don't know if it'll be that way at Winamp, but I think it's at least worth a try. What say you all?
