Windows Update Crash w/Winamp running

Good day,

I did try to search around prior to posting this and did not see any related topics. If this has been previously posted or is a very well known issue, my apologies.

Several of my friends and I are using Winamp 2.77 and have finally tracked down what appeared to be an occasional 'crash' we were seeing for the past few weeks. It's not a system crash per se, it actually a Internet Explorer crash. I have been able to reproduce this in a couple of different scenarios and it does seem to be fairly consistent for us.

The workaround (shuting down Winamp prior to performing the scenarios listed below) is pretty obvious, so this post is mostly to inform anyone who might have seen this and not known what the possible issue was. Also we hoped to let anyone interested in fixing it, or getting M$ to fix it, know what we had observed.

Scenario #1:

Perform a clean install of Windows 98SE to C:\Windows
Download all but 1 or 2 of the Windows Updates (leave a couple of the minor downloads out there)
After the multiple reboots...
Start Winamp 2.77 with an MP3 playing (I have also reproduced this on 2.76)
Start Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or 6.x
Goto the Microsoft Windows Updates website
Select product updates
Select an update to download
The download will complete, but as soon as it begins to install Internet Explorer will crash. If you do not have the Internet Explorer reporting loaded you will have an application crash, if it is installed it will step in and restart IE.

Performing these sames steps with Media Player 7 running, playing the same .mp3 files will not result in this issue. This is not meant as anything but a reference for comaprison.

Scenario #2:

Perform a clean install of Windows 98SE to C:\Windows
Download all patches except one of the Internet Explorer Updates.
Download one of the Internet Explorer updates (I.E. 5.5 SP2 or I.E. 6.x), select Custom install, and tell it you simply want to download the files (under the advanced tab in the I.E. install)
Once you have downloaded the I.E. version to disk, Start Winamp 2.77 (here again I have also reproduced this on 2.76 as well, just an FYI more than anything)
Start the install for Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or 6.x
What I have seen on both systems I have run these tests on is that the install will start, but soon after selecting the 'I accept' the install will crash.

The systems I have done this on are as follows:

Common components -

Windows 98SE
DirectX 8.0a

System #1 -

ECS K7S5A (latest official BIOS as of yesterday, 10/12/2001)
Duron 850 (not overclocked)
Onboard RealTek NIC
Onboard Avance Logic audio
Sony 4x4x?? CD-RW
10GB Maxtor HD
Creative TNT2 Vanta 16MB TNT2 card running nVidia 21.83 drivers

System #2 -
Abit SH6 (latest BIOS)
Pentium III 800 (Slot 1, 100Mhz, no overclocking)
SBLive Value (Latest Drivers)
Intel 10/100 NIC
IBM 30GB 75GXP
Creative 52x CD-ROM
Plextor 10x12x32 CD-RW
Hercules Prophet Geforce Pro running nVidia 21.83 drivers

As I said not a major issue for me or my friends, but we did want to communicate our personal finding and see if we could hep get another very minor issue resolved. Keep up the great work Winamp is definitely our favorite!

Thank you in advance.

Yes, yes they do!! Like I said not a big issue, but it did take us a while to 'make the connection'.
