fuzz in windows xp

When I hit the start menu in Windows XP Pro, Winamp sometimes gets a bit of fuzz in the playback; sounds kinda like the kind of feedback you'd get when plugging in a guitar amp. Not sure it would qualify as a skip. I'm running winamp on a 900mhz Thinkpad w/ 256 mb ram, so I know it should be alright. When I first installed winamp under win2k, I got the same kind of feedback, but switching to Directsound output seemed to help. Upgraded to Windows XP Pro, and the fuzz came back. I've tried changing buffer times and delays in Directsound and waveout, but that doesn't help. PP's experimental dsound out seems to make the problem worse, and the busthrottle=1 trick doesn't work either.

Sounds like bad sound drivers for me. Makes sure you have the proper Windows XP drivers for your sound card.

Hi there phong.

I have win xp on my other computer, and had the same problem. The songs all sounded really screachy for a few seconds. I uninstalled winamp and re-installed it. I have not had a problem since then.

You may want to try this.

Good Luck!

tried to reinstall winamp. didn't help. interestingly enough, I think that windows media player might be skipping as well. maybe something to do with directsound output?

The Game Theater XP based on the Crystal Fusion 4630 has the same problem. The only solution for it is a new driver release. You might have the same problem. Another thing it might be is the video drivers. I've had bad sound due to video drivers. Make sure you have the newest drivers for your video.

Forgot to mention that the soundcard is an integrated chip, a "crystal soundfusion."
