crashes when I choose a vizualization plugin

I'm running Winamp 2.77 under Windoze 2000 (SP2). Everything works well until I try to change the vizualization plugin (using either Ctrl-K or Preferences-Plugins-Visualization). Then I get something like "winamp.exe" has caused errors and will be shut down"

Strange thing is that I can change the name of the plugin in the .ini file.

Any suggestions on how to solve this? I'm becoming convinced that this is a Win2000 problem, rather than a winamp bug, but it's frustrating nonetheless!

do complete uninstall/reinstall, remove any third-party plugins, etc
