Nullsoft encourages skinner.exe

It seems that far from wanting to imporve the quality of the Winamp Skins Database, Nullsoft are actually encouraging the use of skinner.exe.

The Cyanide Shop, a skinner.exe variant, is a featured plugin. What it going on? Have the llamas finally sent the Nullsoft crew into the realms of insanity? Or is it another case of a badly chosen featured download (remember the Sputnik rip)?

Skinner is an ok tool for beginners or us who are not that good as a artist (like me). I don't like seeing the slapped togather and posted skinner skins anymore than most people but it is a good learning tool.

Yes skinners should play with the software first and improve the skin as they learn before posting. "Skinning is for FUN". My old skinner skins that are posted only had the buttons and eq bar modified, My new ones I'm only using the skinner to do the layout and I trying to do my own buttons, AVS, etc (Remember I'm not an artist).

Do I look forward to Winamp 3.x ? Yes because I will know how to modify the changes that are going to come.

I have to agree that skinning is fun. I would also have to say that any of the people who are doing really good skins, pixel by pixel, are more likely to complain about how things are around here, how they feel ratings are unfair, how they feel censorship is unfair, and are more likely to just leave the community and skin by themselves and post them somewhere else.

So don't take it personally that ns/aol/tw is promoting the use of skinner.exe

They'll need those ...less involved, less talented, ... people to keep this portion of their company going.

There are too many of them, and not enough of us.
The only real thing we can do to make a difference is continue to be helpful to the new people, continue to point them in the right directions as far as art programs.. and continue to encourage those who do make excellent skins, to keep doing it. And doing more of it. This will not necessarily create a more quality database... but it will most certainly raise the overall percentage of quality skins.

If anyone can find any of the skins I made please email them to Forevever@aol.com
I can't remember all the names but specifically hunting for Lascivious, and DEVOUR (compilation with Jax) and any in the Impulse series which had 6 total. Auriferous, Gilt, Impulse, Nadir, and 2 others I can't remember but you dig.

I find it interesting that Mikeskin says he is not an artist but he looks forward to WA3 as he will know how to modify it.
I think we will see a different breed of skin authors for WA3. Generally, people who are skilled in design are not so interested at more techie things (and vice versa). There are less people who are good at both, and that is what it will take to make a good WA3 interface.

I for one will not be skinning WA3 (unless i can find someone to write the code )

As for skinner.exe, obviously it's days are numbered as well. I don't know jack about coding, but I expect it will be much more difficult to write a skinner.exe for WA3 than it was for WA2. So I guess that is good for winamp.com , as they should have a database of WA3 skins made by people who know what they are doing. And it won't just be full of shite picture skins.

I think you're wrong, ripe, as long as Winamp 3 supports Winamp 2's skins, there will be skinner.exe (It sucks, I know ), would you believe it, I started as a MS Paint skinner (Marko Amp 1 - deleted, start of Marko Amp 2), then switched to skinner.exe (Lara Amp, Extravagant Amp 1 & 2, Moon Amp 1 & 2 etc.), then I realised that is a lamers way of making skin, and I switched back to MS Paint and I'm learning Photoshop, I think I made a great decision by switching to MS Paint, and my skins show that (Joke Amp , Marko Amp 2.5 and Extravagant Amp 2.5). I'll probably try to learn XML, but if I fail, I'll make 2.xx skins for 3.xx.

btw. I'll start working on Moon Amp soon .

Well, even if skinner.exe skins will still survive, i think they popularity will decline with all these new crazy skins that think outside the 275x116 box.
