Winamp suddenly not working after updating sound drivers
So, yesterday that nifty "Windows Update Critical Notification" or whatever it's called system in Win 2K popped up a notice saying "New sound drivers at Analog Devices Inc." or something to that effect. I've got a sound card integrated into the motherboard, made by said Analog Devices Inc., and more specifically I think, by a subsidiary of theirs called Staccato. The sound software it installs is called SoundMAX. Confused yet?
So I dutifully click the link and the new sound card software is downloaded and installed. A while later, WinAmp starts intermittently stopping -- what happens is that it at the beginning of a new track it "plays" silently the first couple seconds -- i.e. you can see action in the frequency analyser window in the main player. But you hear nothing. And then the song stops with the frequency analyser freezing in its last state, like when you click Pause. WinAmp itself is not frozen -- it responds normally to all clicks, buttons, menus, etc. But it acts as if it's paused and there's no way to unpause it. If you click Play again, it does the exact same thing. I've reinstalled Winamp to no effect. I've checked the Output and it's set to WaveOut as it should be. I haven't been able to reinstall the sound card software since it was downloaded from a Microsoft site but can't be found there or on the Staccato site. Anyone have any ideas here? |

I've a feeling Win2k's auto update has messed up. Wouldn't be the first time!
Try here for the correct drivers: http://www.windrivers.com/script/info.asp?id=555 Not much we can do about it. ![]() Another option is to use System Restore and try set your system back to a time before the update was installed. |

I do believe you are right. I found the previous version of the audio drivers on the system CD that came with the computer (purchased summer 2001), so I uninstalled the new sound software and reinstalled the old. Now it works OK again. Except SoundMAX has now disappeared -- it was a control panel for doing tricky things with 3d sound, e.g. making it sound like you're in a concert hall, sewer pipe, padded room, etc. I didn't use it anyway.
