Installer Problem

Hi to all in here.

No please don't screw your face thinking there's again someone unable to read the forum. It's **not** a CRC error.

Today, after many years of using WinAmp without any probs I get the following error when trying to install another prog:

Headline: Nullsoft Install System v1.44ERROR
Message: Installer too small

As you can can imagine this points me to WinAmp - if ever this might be true. First I searched the MS knowledgebase for this issue and found some installer probs but nothing fits.

I turned to Win2k since some time but i'm not that well used with it yet. So it also might be some kind of those "well formulated messages" we all may know from various versions before. I have no idea.

The prog i stumbled over is a little thing called eDonkey which I won't trust either. But nevertheless I never had any probs with WinAmp before and so my question now is:
Has anybody an idea on this?
(You wouldn't expect this question, would you?) :-)

As i'm not used to express in english daily, i hope my question is somehow comprehensible.

Regards
Hook

You never found anything in the forums on that error? It's almost half as common as the CRC one

It's caused when the download is cut off but Internet Explorer thought it got the whole thing.

Redownload Winamp and everything should be fine.

...but the problem's got nothing to do with Winamp.
According to Hook, this error message is coming from the eDonkey installation, whatever that is?
Obviously, it also uses Nullsoft's NSIS/Super Pimp installer.

Basically though, as Neo says, it means that you didn't download the full installer. Delete it and download it again . . . and don't use a 3rd party download manager.

Ok Hook...here goes. The way an installer like NSIS (Nullsoft Super Installation System) works is:

The first part of the .exe file is the program that uncompresses the files and shows all the luvly little boxes, etc.

The second half of the very same .exe file (all this stuff is hidden to the end user) is the compressed files, all stuck onto the end of the .exe.

The installer for e-donkey (which is obviously NSIS, and has nothing to do with Winamp) is telling you that the file has not been fully downloaded, and the second half is too small for all the files that have been compressed and stuck on.

Re-download, and, as DJ Egg said, don't use 3rd party downloading software (as in Go!Zilla, and Real Download), and it should all be fine.

I'm sorry if it seems like I was talking down to you a bit — I have no doubts that you are an experienced computer user, and I was not implying at all that you are a newbie or you don't know anything. That is just the way it came out, and d00d...I don't want to have to write that all out again!

Hi Ant,
let me first thank you for your nice answer. Unfortunately i had little time to come here the last few days. Sorry.

I´m working on hardware and networking for more than 10 years now, but, as there was no need for it i have almost no knowledge of programming etc.

I hoped to make clear in my first question, that the error windows "hints" me to winamp, was only my opinion not a statement. I´m using winamp now from the time it had to be registered, what i did, and i know this is not common for the germans ;-( I always made my DLs from this site here and all the times it worked
properly.

When i read the postings of Neo and Dj i was really upset about the way those were written. My impression was they are joking on my behalf(???). May this come from my poor experience in english - could be.
My first thought then was if its going this way it´s best to quit use of winamp, delete it and have a look at another player wich are plenty around. I haven´t yet.

Mostly i don´t use a DL-mgr., only seldom for some mp3s i take GetRight. Your post led me to re d-load this prog and not as the other posts say re-download winamp. Now the install worked fine. We´ll see if it´s worth.

Let me thank you for taking the time to explain this in a working manner and not the way "hey you dumb ... why couldn´t you find that somewhere in here. Please have patience with my english (I have to use my dict. for missing words and hope i use it right.)

Best regards out to the cold ;-)

Yes, you misunderstood my post completely.
I wasn't being facetious or condescending or patronising, I was being factual.

All I said was that you should delete the eDonkey installation EXE file and download it again, because the file you downloaded was incomplete.

The only connection between Winamp and eDonkey is that they both use the NullSoft Installation System (NSIS). Nothing more, nothing less.

However, as for Neo . . . well, I can't speak for him
My initial reply was actually more directed to him than you, kind of like a natural response to his reply, if you know what I mean ?!?!

btw, your English seems pretty good to me, but if you do have trouble reading/writing English, there are plenty of German members of the forum (eg. Budgie, Wonderblood, Chris Beman, etc) who will gladly answer in German if you request it

Anyway, I'm really sorry if I offended you in any way.
Believe me, it was unintentional.
So please forgive me . . . purleeeeeease

Hi DJ,
I didn´t want to blame you anyhow. Sorry if I did.

Since some years im working in a "pure german" company with no need and place to use my english anymore and I notice it´s disapearing more and more. (btw. what means "facetious" - could find it neither in my dict. nor on altavista)

You tried to get me redownload this lil´ prog and I thought you mean "reload winamp" ... which I never had probs with. Funny.

I focussed your reply more to me than to anydody else (that´s the way it went) and I didn´t enjoy this. There my answer came from.

Thanks for being polite to my English.

Oh, and another question: what means "purleeeeeease" ???
Couldn´t find that either ...

With my best regards
Hook
PS: Meanwhile finding more functions here ...

Cool
No problem my friend

It was all just a silly misunderstanding, yes?

by the way . . .

facetious means witty/sarcastic

purleeeease . . . you kidding me there?
If not, then it's just a phonetic spelling of the word "please", how you might actually say it if you really really meant it, if you know what I mean ?!?!

Anyway, it's all Neo's fault for not reading your first post correctly

Oh, and hey, did you get eDonkey to install properly?
(and what is eDonkey anyway?)

Hi DJ,
still sitting here (it´s allmost midnight) but leaving soon
Have to go to work in a few hours
Please excuse me answer into your post.

> It was all just a silly misunderstanding, yes?
Yes I think it obviously was.

> facetious means witty/sarcastic
Thanks I really couldn´t find it.

> purleeeease . . . you kidding me there?
He he - yes i did

> Anyway, it's all Neo's fault ... <snip>
No comment on this from my side.

> ... eDonkey to install properly?
Yes after reload from another place it did. If it´s worth - I don´t know. Had no time to try it yet.

What it is? It´s another peer proggie used by some "sitez" to "distribute" "filez".
It´s more or less something like a substitute for napster / morpheus & co. Have no idea yet how it´s working, behaving, worth to look at.
I´ll see - AtGuard is my helpfull friend (hopefully)

Regards from overseas

Glad to see that you got your problem sorted, Hook. On a side note, it might be worth your while taking a look at the Winamp World Domination forum, a discussion forum for our multilingual members.
