MP3 vs. WMA
Hey, i'm a DJ converting my CD collection onto the computer, just wondering what way everyone thinks to go MP3 or WMA? WMA claims that they capture more of the original WAV but I don't know if this is true or not. What do you think?

i can't hear the damn difference between:
a 192 cbr/avg vbr ogg a 192 cbr mp3 a 192 wma v8 it's with the best encoders, then i even converted some mp3 to ogg some mp3 to wma to check some compressed conversions for the hell of it. |

a wma file encode at 64kps sounds the same as a 128kps mp3 file the only different is the file size
now a 128 kps mp3 file compare to a 64kps mp3 file your going to see a big difference so if you wanna save some space and not lose any quality try WMA and please dont say it sucks just becuase its a microsoft product cause that just right stupid |

The problem with WMA is that you lock yourself into a proprietary format, possibly containing DRM restrictions. The default setup for making wma's out of your cds will install some drm technologies on top of your music. If you try to play these on another computer, you will be informed that you don't have a license to play them on that computer. You can turn off the DRM stuff, but I wouldn't know how since I won't ever use it.
Ogg's quality is pretty much accepted to be better than mp3, and it's an open source format that more and more people are supporting. The people that make the ogg vorbis technology, Xiph.org, just released a integerized version of their codec, which will let hardware manufatcuress produce hardware that can playback and record oggs, cheaply. Your best bet is too see what works best for you, mp3 or ogg. But I would NOT use WMA. Ogg's are comparable in quality, but will allow you much more flexibility in the future. If you want to make oggs, you can get the latest beta of cdex ( http://cdex.n3.net ) (very stable for me), or use oggdrop ( www.vorbis.com ). Cdex also supports encoding to mp3 and other formats. -=Gonzotek=- But I'm feeling much better now. |

Try to use non-microsoft products if you can. Windows is the only product you are allowed to use

I can't beleive that people are STILL debating this...MP3, ALWAYS MP3 (or preferably Ogg). Do not use WMA unless you are encoding to a bitrate <= 64 kbps (not something I'd recommend unless you are REALLY strapped for HDD space). Do yourself and anybody who you may share your music files with a favor and use MP3/Ogg, if not for their better quality then at least for the fact that neither one is proprietory (well okay, MP3 kind of is), and neither one is SDMI compliant.

go for MP3, dude! mp3 sounds good and have been sounding good eversince it emerged. Plus, it's more widely used, which makes it more compatible with a lot of programs. I recommend MP3! but the choice is yours.

ogg at q=6 is what does it for me. MP3 isn't as good imho, worse sound and crappy tagging.

Stick to MP3 or Ogg. Don't re-encode stuff. And drop WMA

If you are going to encode WMA, dont use M$ products...
same goes for recoring any media (DVD for example) |
